I was always the "hero" in IT when I'd set someone's monitor to like 85hz or whatever was considered the safe bet. "Since you did that I don't have headaches anymore!" No kidding! It used to drive me insane when I'd try to use a monitor that was set to 60hz. "The monitor is like a strobe light and flashing at 60hz, how do you work like this? Let me fix that. " "You can see that?"
I would get this constantly.
"...no, I don't see any difference" between 60Hz and 75Hz, or 60 vs 85.
My final CRT was a Trinitron tube running at 120Hz. Some day I might have an LCD that matches its grayscale response time, colors, and viewing angle.
(I don't miss being rid of its 70lb fat ass though.)

Yeah, that aspect seemed really fake/staged. I mean seriously, come on now. People still have freaking computers. People that do anything more than basic use and/or play games need real computers. They have a separate power button. I still enjoyed the video though.

Well in their defense, some people are really clueless when it comes to computers. When I was in school (around 1993-94) I was hired as a "computer consultant" along with some classmates and we went to a paid training session together. When asked to turn on the computers, I was the only one that knew how. Other people tried clicking the mouse, hitting the keyboard, or turning on just the monitor.

With that said, I suspect that the "react" video people are getting their respondents from the vast pool of wannabe actors. I further suspect that these respondents are told that they will get more screen time if they ham it up.

Here I am working in WP. Oh, I need to edit a figure from AutoCad.
1) Exit WP.
2) c:
3) ren config.sys config.sy1
4) ren autoexec.bat autoexec.ba1
5) ren config.sy2 config.sys
6) ren autoexec.ba2 autoexec.bat
7) ctr-alt-del
8) acad
9) do stuff in AutoCad
10) exit AutoCad
11) c:
12) ren config.sys config.sy2
13) ren autoexec.bat autoexec.ba2
14) ren config.sy1 config.sys
15) ren autoexec.ba1 autoexec.bat
16) ctr-alt-del
17) wp

Life was so much simpler then.

You might have done that once. Then you would have written a couple of batch files.

Windows 95 was the first OS I hacked and pissed my cousin off. LOL! I never had a computer so I had to break into his all the time just to use the Internet. Damn pecker head.

Probably my favorite bit on exposure to older tech was in the Star Trek movie "The Voyage Home" from 1986. Scotty is at the machine shop looking to get some Transparent Aluminum and he's show the computer he's to use to design the piece. He stands in front of it uncertain what to do and the guy hands him the mouse and says you use this. Scotty then picks up the mouse, brings it to his mouth, and says, "Hello Computer".

Favorite scene in the movie...

I stood in line at midnight at CompUSA to buy Windows 95, then went home and stayed up until 4:30AM installing it and playing with it. Was super-geeked at the time. It was such a huge leap over DOS/Win3.1.

To be fair, there are a lot of those all-in-one machines out there with 1 power button.

Also, just about everyone leaves their monitor on these days and lets it go into power save, so they probably don't ever turn the monitor on really (and that's a really big power button compared to what they are used to seeing). Of course, my parents are the opposite. I tell them over and over that the monitor will turn itself off and they just need to move the mouse to wake it, but they always turn it off.

My favorite part was seeing "It's now safe to turn off your computer" and their bewilderment at the message. It's been so long I hadn't really thought about that in a long time.

I take issue with the claim that Win95 was the first OS of it's type. Atari, Amiga, and Apple had similar OS's nearly 10 years earlier with similar capabilities. Other than that though, I found their reactions amusing.

Looking back, even though I lived through computing since the early 80's, my reaction to Win95 today would not be far from theirs. I'd know what needed to be done and things, but appalled anyone ever used it.

The kid with the sour cream stain on his shirt knows nothing has changed.

Usually, though several of the monitors at work remain on and show some kind of test message instead of going to sleep. I don't think I've seen any others do that elsewhere.
And there are some large-screen monitors that also won't go into sleep mode. (The PC's set to put them to sleep after 30 minutes. They go black, but the backlight is still on.)
...though, now that I think about it, quite a few LCD there are running with VGA cables, if that makes a difference.

I wonder how many of these kids were well-familiarized with phones or tablets before sitting in front of a PC?

That reminds me of how old I am now. At least, the video start in windows 95 not in windows 2.1.x wherein applications can be counted in your fingers.

In 20 years, they will be looking at smartphones as ancient relics. By then, many of us are going to either be dead or will be sick.

"The internet won't work because there's no Wifi on Windows 95." This video is stupid. Just like the Fine brothers with their googly eyed walnut creator. What the hell is wrong with that guy?

The funny thing is, not a lot has changed. It's just slower and a bit more crude. Try putting them in front of an IBM PC, handing them a DOS disc, and challenging them to get Hero's Quest up and running.

Someone else here as old as me

Don't forget the 8" floppies and the Z80.

Paper tape for assembly language and then we got machines that used 5.25 floppies. DS/DD, ftw. The intel 8085&86 were the bomb.

Let's not forget the card readers for fortran. Or the Y2K scare that gave some old guys jobs....

Spoiled assed kids should have to install a modem. PITA. Doesn't work, doesn't work, doesn't work.....miracle happens...modem works.

The kids pushing monitor power, what, the only computers they ever used were laptops or imacs? Staged crap.

The 'react' franchise needs to die, and I hope I did not give those pompous asshats ANY money.

I can't tell you the last time I turned on/off the power at my desktop LCDs.

I used to do it until I started dealing with DisplayPort and HDMI. When you turn off those monitors, Windows "forgets" that they exist and shifts your windows around.

this react just seems really fake now. i mean, even elementary schools have computer classes like at 6th grade or earlier now. my niece is currently learning python in school, and she's 10 years old.

I don't know if you remember the poke Apple took at MS when Win 95 came out:
C: \ngrtltns.w95 or something close to that.
