Just had a telephone interview for a job today. At the end of conversation, she said they will go over the responses and contact me if I get selected to next round. Does that really mean I did shit and should forget about my chances? Usually I get offered an in-person interview at the same time.

I've had plenty of phone interviews which ended with one of those "we'll contact you at a future time about on-site interview" and most lead to an on-site interview.

so don't count yourself out just yet.

It really depends. If you're a handsome lad, then you should send a picture to them before they interview you so they know what you look like.

Yea more than likely you can write this off and move on. Don't get your hopes up on this one. Only times I've had interviews scheduled after end of phone interview, was after questions and before hanging up.

relax, you said it wasn't your best interview..so chill. many interviewers do that, in order to discuss it with their superior.

The last telephone-based interview I had I was offered a job on the spot. The last two in-person interviews I had I was offered the job on the spot.

I have to wonder, though, what these job-offering interviewers get from interviewed individuals sometimes.

Last time I did a telephone interview (for an internship) it went like this:

1) Email offering preliminary telephone interview
2) Said preliminary telephone interview (not very technical)
3) Days pass, email offering second round telephone interview
4) Second round telephone interview (primarily technical)
5) Receive email an hour or so after second round interview requesting a "quick phone call" the next day
6) Receive offer during said "quick phone call"

Now this was for an internship as I said, so the entire process may be a lot more lax since the risk to the company is much less but still something to think about. Also they may be interviewing multiple people for the position and would like to get all interviews in before making a decision.

It's completely normal for them to not commit to anything immediately. They most likely have to discuss your answers with the hiring manager and other HR reps up the food chain.

LOL that is pretty much the standard response to ANY phone interview... particularly when there is more than one person who is required to weigh in on hiring descisions.

Man up.

They probably have multiple interviews scheduled and want to pick out of the best ones. Some companies schedule them through the entire week and you won't hear for a while.

In other words, if you don't hear from them in a reasonable period of time, only then will you know if you failed.

Happened to my wife a few months ago. They did call back in a couple days to do an inperson interview and then they offered her the position with a phone call a few days after that.

One thing to remember is with the economy the way it is they probably have the ability to select from a large pool of applicants so it can take time for them to go through all of them.

I just had a phone interview a month ago, and it ended the same way. Got the on-site interview and the job. You're fine.

Why do people always assume employers are a bunch of sneaky lying group of people? Did you ever think that maybe they actually have to go over responses, and then get back to you? Maybe you were the first interview. How would they know if you were the best or worst yet?

People worry too much.

In many companies especially if your job is technical...you get an initial HR interview via phone. This is basically a personality test to see if you match the culture and get an idea of certain red flags.

Then the hiring manager will usually call. This is to determine if they like you or not. They may ask a few questions, but usually it's to get the look and feel of the candidate. You should know within a day or two if they intend to go further.

Then if they like you they usually end up calling back and asking when some good times are for a technical interview. Once that happens it depends on the company. Some will tell you right on the spot if you are in or not. Some want to wait for a future date until all candidates have been reviewed.

I am getting ready for step two of the process tomorrow night.
