Without global warming, the earth's average surface temperature would be below freezing.

CO2 and other greenhouse gasses (water vapor even) all contribute to the greenhouse effect. They prevent some heat from leaving the planet via infrared radiation. An increase in CO2 levels does cause an increase of this effect.

Katrina on it's own is an anomoly, but the effect being alluded to pretty much defies being a statistical accident.

Personally, I think light pollution is the bigger problem at the moment. So many urbanites haven't even seen the skies, don't even know what the Milky Way looks like, can't tell a planet from a star, etc.

I agree... When we go up north (MI's UP) on vacation it's hard to believe I'm looking at the same sky.
