The C8 is a nice tube. I have the C8 carbon fiber OTA mounted on the 2" leg Celestron mount.

I didn't see this noted in the article, but most worthwhile astronomy, amateur or otherwise, is done so late (or early if that's how you look at it) that contrails wouldn't seem to be an issue. How many flights are there over most US cities at 2AM? I understand the larger cities might have international flights at late hours, but in most of these cities you're not doing any worthwhile astronomy anyway due to the light pollution.

Personally, I think light pollution is the bigger problem at the moment. So many urbanites haven't even seen the skies, don't even know what the Milky Way looks like, can't tell a planet from a star, etc.

I agree... When we go up north (MI's UP) on vacation it's hard to believe I'm looking at the same sky.

I want to go some mountains in the middle of nowhere just to look through a thinner atmosphere.

That's a shame, I just built myself one. I guess that I only have another 44 years to use it. =(

In other news, scientists are "worthless" by 2050 because they got pwned so hard on global warming that they lost all credibility.

Optical telescopes perhaps. With the advent of faster computing and ultra wideband signal acquisition and processing we'll be able to explore the cosmos from terrestrial pov's for a long time. Also it's a short ride to space to park platforms aka Hubble.

Of course your typical refractor is still good for peeping tom's to get a glimpse of titties now and then of the neighborhood hottie. That will never be worthless!

Cheers!

WTF you talking about. Global warming is real, and its effects have already been felt. Look at Katrina.

The scientists obviously didn't take into account that oil production will be much lower in 2050 than it is now. Prices will go up causing air travel to significantly decrease resulting in LESS travel, which will mean less contrails. Unless the scientists find a replacement for cheap oil soon travel costs will increase.

Right, because there have never been hurricanes in the history of the world!

Oh snap!

Global warming is real.

What remains in hot debate is if humans are responsible and what percentage of responsibility lies with development of civilisation.

Cheers!
