Tell me about Austin, TX

Or maybe a condo.. Can anyone tell me what parts if the city are nice, and where to avoid? For instance, what zip codes should I be plugging into Realtor.com?

I'm looking for a singly family house, 3bedrooms or more, 2+ bath, garage.. I commute for work (read: I spend a lot of time on planes) so distance to the airport is a factor. Within 30 mins would be ideal.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

The nice, new houses are all west of Loop 1 (Mopac). There are plenty of new houses north of Austin in Leander and Round Rock, though those are quite a distance from the airport especially during traffic hours. Buda and Kyle are being built up south of Austin, but again the distance to the airport is going to be longer and those houses are usually more poorly built.

If you are looking for something that isn't out in the burbs, then the South Congress area and South Lamar area will suit you. They do have condos there, but as with the houses in that area, they are very pricey.

The Hyde Park area north of downtown is also pretty nice.

If price is not a factor, there are high rise lofts on 5th street downtown.

Pretty clean city, nice weather year round (sometimes can get too hot though), great nightlight/entertainment, cheap living, good women.

Lots of gays if you're into that kinda thing hah

just stay west of 35 and you should be okay.

even though austin is the state capitol, it is not stereo-typical texas. cool town, GREAT local music scene (austin city limits), lots of good bars and nightlife, great food. terrain is great too, lots of hills, trees, etc. good places to go hiking nearby. plus you are pretty close to both houston and san antonio.

Avoid West Campus, just North of Campus and anything east of I-35.

It really depends on what your priorities are IMO. If you want good schools go out west, if you want good food go to south austin.. etc

The airport is no more then 20 minutes from most of Austin metro without traffic, but good luck finding a time of day without traffic. I-35 backs up even at 2am.. go figure.
