Also we have awesome Middle Eastern food. Actually we have a great range of all ethnic foods in the area. Traffic Jam's near WSU has some great Ethiopian.

Have you been to CedarLand in Dearborn?

La Shish is back open too!

Detroit has a horrible reputation, and it's got a LOT of problems, but, the downtown area does seem like it's turning around. I've read a lot about younger generation of folks moving in, artists, or people who are not tied to an office. Seems like there are some really desirable areas, not just all filth. Also, robocop is awesome.

I am pretty sure that west is the one direction that Canada isn't from Detroit

All part of the fun

Yep - Dearborn MI has the highest concentration of Arabs-Americans in the country (There is a reason Royal Jordanian Airlines flies to DTW) and that makes this one of the best places to try Middle Eastern Food - IMO of course

I'll be honest though - the Mexican places that I have tried haven't quite compared to those I've tried in California. Maybe I'm just not going to the right ones though...

Indeed. North? Yes. East? Yes. South? Yes. West? No.

I won a radio contest when I was like seven years-old. The question was: what country do you encounter first when traveling due south from Detroit. My old man told me to call up and say "Canada."

Clearly I do not try enough different food in the city.

If you are in New Center area by the fisher building try New Center Eatery best damn chicken and waffles on the planet.

Also its not in Detroit but in Allen Park Moro's. They serve veal tenderloin, beef tenderloin and pasta dishes. No other cuts of steak except tenderloin/filet mignon. Also all desserts are prepared flambe tableside. Incredible food.

i'm looking for internships for the summer. One that responded is quicken loans, located in detroit downtown.. 2 miles from wayne state university (whom apparently they have an agreement with to house interns during the summer. I need to talk to the company to find out if that housing is comped or if i have to pay for it.) basically 2 miles strait down Woodward.

one thing i'm worried about is crime. My 5 minutes on google won't give me numbers for actual crime rates in the area. my experience in los angeles says stay out of certain areas, and don't go out at night without purpose and you'll be fine. but I don't know detroit, so i don't know those areas.

Anyone have any experience or can link any crime statistics that might be helpful?

overall's are easy to find, but block by block isn't so. :/

EDIT: Also, i'm coming from san diego, so i'm gonna be flying in. no car, no living in suburbs.

i'm thinking that means bus, or 30 min walk to/from. busses not too bad?

I used to work for Quicken Loans.
Its very simple:
1. Stay where you are
2. Do not work for Quicken Loans.
3. Busses - you will get raped in the bus.
4. There is nothing to do over here. The city is a radioactive shithole. Stay OUT
5. Anyone who advises the OP to come over here from San Diego is a big douche.
6. Sand Diego is an awesome place. If you really crave change, seek an internship in Chicago or in New York. Detroit has nothing to offer you. Yes, there are some bright spots. Yes, there are some nice restaurants and clubs. Yes, you ca have good time if you really want. But all of that is really nothing when compared to any HEALTHY city.

You want to know what Detroit is like. Watch this youtube video. The city looks like something out of a scifi move, a post apocalyptic WWIII America.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6WKMNmFsxM

Lived in the Suburbs of Detroit most of my life.. just moved to Florida. I've been to downtown Detroit quite a few times.. used to go to Bleu all the time and walk around Woodward and other areas wasted. Im lucky I didn't get robbed and shanked honestly. Yes there are cops that patrol the main roads downtown but a lot of them are corrupt and cant be trusted.

That video pretty much shows you what its like in the middle ring of Detroit.. With the city center starting to come back to life slowly with the hipsters and college students moving in and also some corporate people now as-well. Right outside of that, I mean RIGHT outside as in a block or two is whats in that video and that branches out for miles until you start hitting suburbs like Redford which is turning into Detroit ghetto and then Livonia which is turning to shit also.

I used to have to fertilize some lawns in a few horrible ghettos in Brightmoor.. I got in and out of there so damn fast.. everyone eyeing my 5k machine starting to walk my way and rabid dogs on the loose.

Just realized the OP is in San Diego.. good god do not leave SD for Detroit.. will be the worst decision of your life.

You know, I've never been to Slow's!

LOL. You're going to be rolling in Mexican food. If you do come to Detroit, try Armando's in Southwest Detroit. The neighborhood its in is really fun and there are big park across the street where people take their kids. Armando's has some really GOOD food...but if you want to try different things, there are also older women who sell their dishes, you just have to get lucky enough to see one.

Theres another Mexican Restaurant that I just cannot remember the name of...it is also a great place, all I know is that there is a Bakery across the street from it that is pretty popular.
Los Galanes, it's accros from La Gloria bakery.

If you want real mexican food hit up Taqueria Lupita's (cash only), Mexican Village & Xochimilco are for white people (no offense).

Even though Downtown is "safe" it's still bad. My cousin lives in the apartments near Comerica Park, he and his neighbors have frequent break-ins

Have you been to CedarLand in Dearborn?

La Shish is back open too!
Wasn't the owner of La Shish accused of being connected to terrorist funding?

Me either and it kills me. Everyone talks about how great it is, just have never gotten over there.

Slow's is awesome!

Brisket Encilida app is great, or the surf and turf with brisket and catfish and toss in your sides!

Again, you're not going to see nearly as extreme of racial distributions in downtown/corktown. I mean, it's a city, there are a lot of minorities. But I'm sure it's not 80% downtown.

i haven't worked in 5 years. finding a single company to hire me anywhere is a challenge.

it's a summer internship. i'm there and out in 10 weeks. if during those 10 weeks all i do on my offtime is sit in my dorm room, so be it.

i have been applying all over the fucking country, with absolutely no regard as to where the company is. if I COULD get an internship in san diego, i WOULD. if i COULD get an internship in los angeles, i WOULD. if i COULD get an internship in chicago, i WOULD.

i realize in general that *>detroit. but the key question is is an internship in detroit > nothing at all. the answer to that is probably yes. if i break even in my costs and don't die during my time there, then i'm happy.

Have you been to SD? Good god there is a higher concentration of homeless beggars there than anywhere i have been in my entire life.

If it's only 10 weeks I say fucking do it. You'll have fun. Quicken loans is in an amazing building in an amazing area.

Experience the area while you're there. Even if you decide to never come back, at the very least you'll have street cred for having worked in Detroit proper. Anywhere you go after that, people will be afraid of you. You will fucking pwn.

I'll take living in the van down the river in SD over Detroit any day. Decaying shit-hole. Also, working for Quicken Loans is not good either. You are basically being a slave that helps to rip people off and without the lube. I did not like my experience there. Bunch of fake ass-clowns. Worst time of my life.
