Its the one at the bottom

A 7900 GTX for £199? or so it says Silent too, although i havent heard that many complaints about the 7900's and noise.

Im looking to replace a busted X1900XT 512mb with this nvidia card. Im jumping to the nvidia camp as ive had enough crap with that X1900, its been a good enough card, but it broke for no reason and some games i have like simcity 4 dont like ATI cards. Plus it was noisy and hot. Fantastic graphics though, but i dont play enough graphically intensive games to justify it being there.

So, tell me how the card above would perform in comparison to my old one, and give me any reccommendations of somthing you think would suit my needs better?

My needs:

1. not to break
2. quieter than the x1900 was
3. dosent have to perform as well, but should be able to do oblivion/fear at medium settings, high if possible not neccesary though.
4. price of £0-£250 (£250 absolute max)

Must be a reason the RAM is clocked slower...

As far as it being silent. My GTXes are pretty quiet, but they do emit a high pitched whine (not very loud, but audible) when they run under load. Certainly much quieter than my X1900XTX though.

Personally, I wouldn't get one... smacks of "reject" or "crapshoot" if you ask me. Then again, you might get lucky and get a winner...

Im cut between:

Leadtek GeForce 7950 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-090-LT) - £205

OcUK GeForce 7900 GTO SILENT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - OEM (GX-041-OK) - £199

The 7950 is single slot, wont it be noisier then? But then again its not got the slower memory or anything and its only £5 more.

Ok, the 7900GTO is simply a 7900GTX with a lower clocked memory speed.

7900GTX is 650/1600, while the 7900GTO is 650/1320. Both have GDDR3 512mb, with the GTX cooler as well.

I would grab the 7900GTO as its core speed s 100mhz more than the 7950GT. This card will performa similairly to a 7900GTX, and you could OC the memory.

Did just that, coupled with the fact i see dual slot silent cooling as an advantage.

Nice. This 7900GTO card is MUCH more BANG PER BUCK than the 7950GT.

Enjoy your card

Come back and tell us how it works out. If it OC's even close to a GTX, that's a sweet deal.

Spooni's post near the bottom here makes this look promising. Im a bit wary of o/cing my card as my x1900 broke for no apparent reason (not overclocked), dont want this one to break as well. But i wanna lie to my friends too lol.

"Hehe, I had massive problems with my floppy drive, wouldnt make boot disks and then when it did and i copied the files onto them it corrupted, so I ended up having to steal a floppy drive off one of our ancient pc's.

Anywho, all seems to be working hunky dorey. My card now thinks it is a 7900 GTX and it defaults the clocks at 650 / 800 . With the side of my case off (cos I've been fiddling so much and didnt bother putting it back on) at those clocks the temperature was 47-55 degrees celcius under load (Doom 3 and Dark Messiah) and the supposed slow-down threshold is 110 degrees (which I would never even dream of going anywhere near let alone 70/80. The idle temperature for me is 40-44 degrees but the side case is off and i have no other pci cards or bits near the graphics and it's a nice cool thermaltake with lotsa quiet fans!

I'm going to continue to overclock it now and see how far we can push this safely, a bit like that chap on that link Meat sent me.

So far, the only benefits I can see to having the 7900 GTX Bios is that it will default the card at a decent clock rate and doesnt seem to affect temperature or stability at all. Plus you can lie to your friends and tell them you lashed out on a GTX when you show them benchmarks etc etc.

All in all....I'm rather happy Thanks for the card OcUK, even though it was about 3 days late. :"

Have you tried to OC further?? Isn't there a way that you can edit the original bios to give you 1.4v and just OC the heck out it?

Thats "Spooni" from the overclockers.co.uk forum, not me. Notice i quoted that chunk of text

I got my GTO the other day, i dont wanna oc it simply because my x1900xt died for no reason, i dont want this one to die at all. Anything that increases the chances of it dying im totally against.
