Anyone on here from that town? What's it like, do you like living there, etc? Looking to move from N.E. Kansas where we have snow to some place warmer and there is a job opportunity in Tyler.

I would love to live in Texas. No income tax, great weather, awesome people.

I would be all over it if a job opportunity came up.

Dallas, Houston, and Austin are three of the largest IT job markets in the country.

lil rudeguy doesn't want to move. He's 17, so I have a year.

Plus my company just started expanding into West and Southern Texas. In a year or two, we should have roots. I'll look then. If I look now, I'll want to move now. If someone offered me a job today without me looking, I'd probably be bribing the shit out of lil rudeguy to get him to let us move.

lots of traffic in the major cities, all under roads are under construction in which ever direction your office is. If moving, live close to the job. If you want good schools, go out to the suburbs and suffer traffic everyday.

We're headed there as soon as school is out. I visited DFW last summer and had to be forced back to Ohio. As far as places to live go, I haven't seen many better (in terms of my own personal criteria). It was clean, the people were just generally FIT and HAPPY (as opposed to the midwestern states, where most people are fat and pissed off about it). Tons of amazing food. Not a boatload of culture, but certainly more than Ohio has to offer.

I can't wait. We haven't decided on which of the 3 aforementioned cities we're headed to yet, but probably Austin.

Welcome to every major city in the US.

bleh. ill keep my colorado summers where we hit 100 maybe 5 days a summer.

We very seriously considered Colorado and explored everything up and down the Front Range from FC to CS. Housing is ridiculous in Denver, and trying to figure out the school systems there is like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube blindfolded. Not knocking CO in the least... we're still evaluating it as an option, but it's been a very difficult place to gauge relative to all the other places we've looked.

Texas is hot as hell in the summer, but for 8 - 9 months, it's not bad at all... and I don't mind heat. Beats Ohio, where you get 5 months - 6 in a good year - that are "usable."

i take it you have never experienced the 100 degree 99% humidity with zero wind texas summer have you...

Texas is a big place. Not all areas suffer high humidity. Compared to the northeast (PA) where I grew up, San Antonio is quite dry for the most part. In summer the temp drops 10-20 degrees at night. But yeah, Texas gets hot. 100 degrees isn't for everyone. I sure like it better than the cold. Don't miss dealing with snow and ice for the morning commute.

I'm in E Tx about an hour from Tyler. Only been a handful of times. Seems to be a decent city with a bit of culture. You can find most of what you need there or in Longview. Dallas isn't too far away either. Canton isn't far so you can fill your house will all kinds of crap. Typical Texas, God, Guns and Beef BBQ. The last one is hardest to get used to. BBQ should be pork.

Not that familiar with Tyler.

But I suspect that you will like it. And it will get less snow than Kansas.

For me, all things being equal, I'd probably favor places a bit more west and south: Hill Country, San Antonio, Austin, et. al.

Then again, if you have a job offer in Tyler, it will get you closer.

You may want to check out movingtotexas.net

Best of luck,
Uno

I have family in Tyler. Been there a couple times, seemed to me to be your typical small Texas football town.

I don't think you understand the heat, think running your AC 24/7 from April or May to October, burning your hands on the steering wheel, the utility bills, etc.

I've experienced 110 degree Michigan heat with 85% humidity. I don't mind heat.

Really? You seriously want to go there? Houston recently broke it's record of something like 38 days with the temperature over 100 - the heat index was over 110. That's like me saying, "Oh yeah, I got 3 inches of snow a few years ago AND IT WAS AWESOME. I CAN MOVE TO MICHIGAN AND BE FINE!"

Just, no.

Tyler's only 40 miles away from me but over many years I've hardly bothered to visit it. All I really know about it is that it has a state park with bike trails and is known for selling roses. It's 90 miles from Dallas. It's probably the largest town in this corner of Texas - 107k.

East Texas is a rainforest compared to West Texas. You will only have to scrape ice off your car once a year, if that. There's violent weather sometimes but it's no Oklahoma.

Business seems to be booming where I live in Longview. Lots of commercial development and construction sites in the last 7 years. Schools are all newly built. Maybe 8 or more hotels have been built. Don't know how it's going down in Tyler, but I'd say Texas is economically healthy.

No state income tax. Only some metro-area counties require emissions testing for your vehicle. Your vehicle must have a state inspection annually though. Costs $14 and you get a window sticker.

There's swarms of Latinos around these days compared to, say, the 80s and 90s. One WalMart has a Mexican-food aisle, Mexican clothing sections in stores, and Spanish radio stations. Got Mexicans next door running a lawn care business.

Just some random thoughts.

I've been through Tyler, but never lived there. It is like a bit over an hour East of Dallas IIRC. Tyler is pretty large (like 260k), so it won't be terribly small town feeling. Also, it will be hot. But, a dyer heat than say Houston. Not too bad. If you like football and guns, you'll fit right in.

Awesome, thanks all for the information. Sounds like a good place to move. We have hot days in Kansas, many over 100 and run the AC from March/April to early October already. The job offer is for my wife actually, and I am in IT so it sounds like there may be some work for me in the area also.

Worst case, is you'd have to commute to Dallas. It might seem like a long way to drive probably 2 hours each way, but tell that to those guys living around DC 30 miles from their job, rather than 90 miles. >_<
