I want:

4-5 car garage
sauna
hot tub
indoor heated pool ... I want a slide coming from the second floor of the house into the pool
recording studio
huge basement / game room
movie theater
huge deck(s) 2 or more story's with stairs connecting them
a private deck off the master bedroom
stocked bar in the game room / basement
very modernized kitchen -- top of the line everything
speakers mounted in every room with a main control system to control what plays through them (no idea how, although I think Kaido had a post about this...)
radiant heat
huge windows for mountain views
huge fireplace
whirlpool tub in bathroom with plasma tv
tucked away on a mountain in the woods somewhere where I can make as much noise as I want and run around naked outside without anyone saying a damn word...

other stuff I can't think of right now. I could go on forever.

One of my friends seriously lives in a dream home. He lives in the boonies of North Carolina but his dad is the mayor of the town. His house is on top of a mountain (which his family owns) called Mama's Mountain and he has an freaking observatory in there. The basement has a bar and the house itself is very roomy and cozy. Oh, and he has another house beside it for his grandparents.

He literally lives in the best house in town.

I'm actively searching for land to build my new home, so I pretty well know what my dream home will be like:

1) ~5000+sf, not including basement
2) Daylight basement, finished
3) 4-5 bedrooms, 4-5 baths
4) 2-story
5) A lot of windows. I like a lot of light
6) Need to have a study/library with a fireplace
7) A shared fireplace in the master bedroom with the master bath
8) A veranda with a fireplace and an area for a built-in grill
9) Hot tub in the veranda area that spills into a small pool; all stone
10) Large walk-in closets with enough room for islands for storage purposes
11) Large kitchen with a large island; two stoves, granite, etc.
12) 3+ car garage
13) Dark hardwood floors throughout the entire house. Absolutely no carpet.
14) All large stone/tile in the bathrooms with a whirlpool tub in the master and a huge glassed-in shower
15) Home theater in the daylight basement
16) Wine cellar in the basement
17) Stone on the exterior of the house all around. None of that facade nonsense on the front only.

That's all I can remember at the moment. I have all the desires written down. I have a great builder, so everything is completely feasible. We're looking at this plan and this plan. Leaning towards the latter at the moment. Should be able to start building in the next 3-6 months depending on when we settle on the land.

Just curious, why do you want the ceilings so high?

lol...just because it's "smart" doesn't mean it has to be expensive. all you need is the hardware (a pretty good setup starts at $500), an old computer to run the scripts on, and controllers (your PC, a PDA, whatever). the audio can be done either from a zoned receiver or, using my design, from touchpanel amps. the stupid touchpanels are the most expensive part of the design. $600 is about the lowest I can realistically go to get full functionality

How much are the touchpanels? Didn't yours have like, weather, temperature, currently playing song name, etc. on them? I'm sure you could get cheaper ones

One thing I think would be really cool would be to have a hot tub that sits right at the end of the house. Then have a large semicircular glass door that revolves around this. This way you could sit in the hot tub outside or inside.

The glass alone for that would cost a mint though. Probably cheaper to user multiple flat sheets.

i don't know specifics but it would be out in the country somewhere with lots of land. i would have my own personal observatory for stargazing. A pool would be nice. I always thought maybe having a glass roof in my bedroom or certain sections of the house would be cool so i could look up at the stars/sky while laying in bed.

I don't want a big house, just something no larger than about 2000sqft. Anything larger would be a PITA to clean, and utilties would be expensive.

My aunt & uncle had what I'd consider to be the perfect house... on a lake in Houston, with 3 decently sized bedrooms, a large living room, formal dining, and a HUGE enclosed "porch" that was actually built as part of the house, and would make a kickass home theater. They had also built a workshop on one side of the house that was connected to the garage. If I ever build a house I'd want something very similar to theirs. I'd love to have a large kitchen too, but I hate "open floorplan" houses. They always have too much "wasted space".

Those ICFs look neat, and they don't seem too expensive... I'll definitely look into those if I ever build a house.

$600 per panel. Breakdown:

$200 - 8" widescreen VGA touchpanel
$200 - 800mhz Mini-ITX computer, ram, CompactFlash card
$200 - front panel, enclosure, wiring, speakers, subwoofer, amp parts, intercom parts

Basically it's a thin client...all you have to do is plug in a network cable from your router or switch so that it can talk to the central server and pull data from it. There are a couple big reasons that I chose to use a computer vs. a terminal-type connection: 1, I needed multiple audio outputs (in-ceiling speaker amp & intercom system); 2, I needed something powerful enough to run Flash (fancy programming GUI for neato visual and sound effects). I'm still trying to find something cheaper but I can't think of anything.

The basic concept is you mount a touchpanel box in the room where you want a touchpanel and speakers. I'd love to do one in every room; hopefully prices will drop. If anyone has a better idea than this, let me know! You could go the PDA route only (for wireless remote controls), but then you'd have to get a dedicated amp for the whole-house audio system. Plus I'd have to program some custom junk for the GUI instead of just using Flash, since Flash needs a decently powerful computer to do all the fancy effects and whatnot.

Yeah ICF is looking real nice, as long as you plan it out carefully so that you don't run into future expansion issues it doesn't look like it has any other drawbacks. My goals for my dream home are as follows:

-low maintenance (long-life building materials & automated systems)
-enhanced home control (smart home system)
-super energy efficient (due to building materials & home automation)
-safe (both security-wise and structurally)

Here are some ideas for the various systems I've gathered so far:

Electrical:
Solar power (plus air if I happen to get a place with a lot of land)
City grid connection (backup for solar, I probably won't be using batteries)
Backup diesel generator
Whole-house surge protection
Structured wiring
3 Quad panels per wall (plenty of outlets)

HVAC:
Geothermal heating/cooling
Ceiling fans
Whole-house HEPA air filter (for air purification)
Radiant heating in tiled floor areas
Remote-control fireplace (part of home theater area; I think they run off natural gas)
Pellet-based fireplace (backup heating if power goes out)
Humidifier/Dehumidifier

Water:
Radiant heating on hard floors (see HVAC)
Tankless water heaters or water recirculation system
Insulated pipes/water heater
Central water filtration system (no filters to replace)
Urinals in addition to toilets

Digital controls:
Normal lighting/thermostat stuff
Augmented digital control system (i.e. house still works if taken offline)
-control from touchpanels in wall, PDA remotes, computer, cell phone, etc.
-controls HVAC, lights, security system (webcams), home theater, etc.
-implements power-saving strategies for reducing monthly costs

Building materials:
-Fireproof (ICF? steel beams? still have some research to do)
-Windows with built-in blinds (no more broken blinds or cleaning required)
-Motorized thermal drapes (keeps cold out during winter)
-Metal/ceramic roofing (some steel systems can be rust/hail/walk-on/noise-proof)

Lawn: "zero-effort lawn"
12" of mulch around house and yard perimeter (to eliminate weedeating)
Lawnbott robotic lawnmower
Sprinkler system
FertiGator (automatic fertilizer injection system attached to sprinklers)

Miscellaneous:
Augmented phone system (POTS running Asterisk for advanced features)
Gigabit Ethernet network with 802.11g wifi
Roobma robotic vacuums & mop bot

I don't really have any idea what I want the house to look like. I want a 2-car garage plus a shop, a home office, and a basement home theater. Everything else is kind of up in the air. We're not quite sure how big of a family we want to have yet, so I'll have to factor those in later (bedrooms, play room, etc.). This is turning into no small project

Bars on all the ceilings so that instead of walking around like a schlub, I can swing around hand to hand like a monkey.

I could have that, but I am missing the second requirement:

Wife who is OK with me installing bars on the ceiling and swinging around hand to hand like a monkey.

Kaido, if you're still on these forums in __ years... and your dream house actually becomes reality... I'm calling for pics now
I love looking at really sweet, modernized houses. I just enjoy it... and when the time comes for myself, I'll know exactly what I want
