Telnet on RH9 Linux

I just installed Red Hat 9 on a server. I am able to SSH to the machine. However, I can't seem to telnet in. Even though I elected for no firewall during setup. I do not have an entry for telnet in /ext/xinetd.d/. Anyone know how to unblock telnet?

It's not blocked, it's just not running, and for good reason. Telnet over anything but a LAN is asking to have your password and/or data sniffed. If you can ssh, why do you care about telnet anyways?

The server is on my LAN at all times. The server is never publicly accessible. I like telnet because I don't need additional software to remote admin from my Windows XP desktop.

I remember there being some redhat gui thingie to enable/disable services at the various runlevels.

Please! Consider installing openssh via cygwin. No? Ok then..

You'll probably need to edit telnet in /etc/xinetd.d/.

Should be fairly self-explanatory.

What about telnetd?

If not, then are you sure you have telnetd installed?

Edit:

Sorry, I'm having to guess a few things here.
Haven't used redhat for years.

Ahh, the hell with it. I'm just going to use SSH. I tried Putty and it's not too bad. Thanks to everyone who got me to convert.

Putty would make a lot more sense than cygwin+openssh. I don't see the point of trying to convince him to use ssh. It *is* on a lan.

edit: hehe, the irony

It is on a *lan*. It's actuallly on a college lan that's entirely switched. I don't have to worry about casual users sniffing it. However, you gotta watch out for net admins!

There are a lot of utilities that can fool switches into sending them your packets or confuse the switch enough it starts broadcasting all packets like a hub.

telnet should be banned. It's amazing that people actually still use it, even on a private LAN. I mean, is there ever such a thing as too much security? Hmmmm, not in my opinion. Anything that leaves my box that requires authentication is encrypted either using ssh or ssl, etc.

A product we write and sell requires FTP between two of the nodes and all their database backup scripts use rsh although we've gotten them to rewrite a stack of them using ssh with public key authentication. FTP and telnet are used mainly because they're standard on all unixes, like vi instead of emacs, so there's no need for anyone to install extra software like ssh to use our product.

Yeah, but in this case...you don't have to install putty, you just run the executable. I think it's roughly 350kb, so there's not really a reason not to go grab it.

I run the machine headless. So no X.

ntsysv is a simple interface for configuring runlevel services. By default, it configures the current runlevel. Or, if you wanted to configure other runlevels, those levels can be specified on the command line by listing the levels after --levels without any spaces... ntsysv --levels 016 edits runlevels 0, 1, and 6. This information was taken right from the man pages.
