Temperature Possibility?

Actually I have two questions:

1. Recently, about over the last week, my machine has started performing complete lock-ups on me, seemingly out of nowhere. They are occuring more and more frequently. I have a K7S5A with an AMD Athlon XP 1500+. I checked out the CPU temperature and it is around 53C - I can't remember if this is high or low. Also, my system temperature is at 40C. About the only thing I can think of is a heating issue as over the last week my area (PA) has gone from a blizzard to 85F today.

2. I'm currently using an old Gateway 17" CRT that takes a lot of space. Even though I don't really have the money right now, I really would like to move to a nice LCD that will be easier on my eyes. My eyesight has been getting worse as a result of what I think is this monitor. I was looking at the Dell 18" flatpanel monitor and the 20" one from dell. Right now they are a little bit too much, but I've seen the 18" down to $479 before, and the 20" can get down to $849 sometimes. Basically, is this a good deal or should I look elsewhere? I need a high resolution, i'd prefer 1600x1200 on a big monitor, but the next lowest is fine too. I'd also like minimal ghosting effect as I'll be playing movies and doing minimal gaming on this, but mostly it will be used for programming (hence the high-res).

Thanks for any input,
Ben

I have a K7S5A and Athlon 1800, as soon as my CPU temp reches 51 or over, it freezes, dont ask why because i dont know.

Im assuming its something else to do with the mobo being unstable with high temps.

I have lived with it so far.

I suggest you get a better cooler for the CPU, as thats what im about to do.

My CPU temps shouldnt go over 40-45 on full load.

I took the heatsink off and put it back on not realising your not supposed to use the thermal pads more than once

53c for the cpu is fine, but 40c is a little high for the system temp. If you want to be sure it is the temp that is a problem, get an air conditioner, or use it at night and see if it still locks up. There are other components that could be getting warm with the system at 40c, that don't endure heat like cpu's do. (chipset, memory, video card, etc...)

Edit: I also have this MB, and I read Myfittys reply. I don't think it is the CPU temp, as that CPU can go over 70c (somewhere like 75-78c) before it locks up, but again, you system temp is a little high. Mine never goes over 32c on a hot day. More case fans ????

53c for cpu is no problem. But as stated, other components may not tolerate 40c ( which is about 100 F ). If you have room in your case, install another case fan. Something around 20cfm would help (not loud). Or try rounded cables to reduce air flow restrictions. Either solution should cost under $10.
