I was playing GTA3 tonight on my Win2k machine and the computer locked. The game was frozen playing the same sound over and over. What was odd is that I couldnt ctrl-alt-del out of it. When I rebooted my BIOS told me the chip was at 46C. Is this a safe temperature? This is the first time the computer has ever totally locked so I was slightly concerned. Should I be?
thanks,
-doug

No. I have Win2k and an Athlon 1900+ that runs at 61 all the time. sometimes up to 70 when I play a game like RTCW for while. I've NEVER had a lockup (in two months since my upgrade). So I doubt it's your CPU overheating. 46 is freezing compared to mine!! lol. I'd just call it a fluke and see if it happens again. If if keeps happening, then you have a problem, but not with CPU overheating.

my 1800+ runs at 43c when it's relatively cool and gets up to 46-49c when it's a humid/sunny day. So I think you temp is fine, maybe it's a graphics prob?

Rebel7254, Have you overclocked?....that's really high for a 1900+...are you using the stock fan?...If so....I think it's time for a change!

My old Tbird 1ghz used to get up to 66c when under load....damn cheap neng fan!

hot? sure. insanely? nah... max spec is 90C on these, and the Asus boards give higher readings than others. now I definitely wouldn't LIKE to have temps that high... mine are @60C max @ full load (dnetd, any intense gaming or benchmark) with stock cooling and it never jumps up. The answer to something like this might be as simple as a better thermal grease, a case fan or two, or just cooler ambient room temp. If someone isn't running in an AC-regulated ~70F room during the summer that makes a huge diff IMO. but if it's stable, why worry if you're not overclocking? All of those factors should be considered. Socket thermisters aren't very accurate...but the Asus boards have C.O.P via the on-die temp sensor anyway so heat shouldn't ever really be a danger.

I'm curious what cooling setup and boards you're running for those temps in windows I do plan on tweaking my setup a bit in a few weeks, but I'm content as-is. I can't justify the extra $50-100 for a drop of 5-10C...that saved money could go towards an iPod or better monitor. Weird how my ol' PIII 1GHz w/ Alpha heatsink ran about as hot as this, hotter w/ the gaming temp spikes. (in the same case, plenty of circulation here)

As for dmw16 you have nothing to worry about honestly it was probably GTA3's fault, I've heard it has some real nasty issues so I wouldn't be surprised.

I have an 1800+, with a lapped FOP32-1 HSF, w/ASII sitting in a Shuttle AK35GTR. Idles at 41C and loads up at 47C. I have seen 51C one time, but that's when my AC in the apt was on the fritz.

The single most important thing you can do for your CPU is to get a decent HSF and use some ASII AND ensure that the HSF is sitting on the CPU correctly.

I doubt it was the CPU that locked you up. I'd bet money on the video subsystem or possibly system memory. Are you overclocking? Reset everything to stock speeds and see if it still happens. Was prolly just a fluke.

I have a 1700+ with the retail heatsink. My external probe shows 53C when playing GTA3, ~45C normal. I also have a side case fan blowing right onto the heatsink, along with its 60MM fan.

Ahhh heat. I'm in Newport News, VA now, and the place I'm staying has broken AC for the time being, so my room is always at 80+. My case and CPU stay pretty constant, at 35C case, 55-56C CPU. (machine in the sig). It's not so bad, but I think I might have to replace my stock HSF with an AX-7 come July and August.
