P4 on a Gigabyte GA-8IRPXP, 512 Meg PC2100 and two 80Meg drives in a RAID 0 setup, together with a Ti200 (?) video card with passive Zalman cooling (pre-heatpipe), all in an Antec Sonata case with an extra 120mm fan by the HDs. The P4 is cooled by a Zalman Cu-7000. All fans at the slowest possible settings as part of my obsession with noise. Nothing is overclocked at present.
I do not do much to stress the system, and my usual CPU operating temps are about 35 or 36C in cool months, and 39 or 40C in the summer, even after the system has been on for many hours. I have no idea how accurate my temp readings are, nor even where the sensor is which produces these readings. I do not think I have ever had a performance related heat problem.
Still, this bugs me. This morning while surfing with OE and a few IE6 windows open, together with the same background stuff that is always running, I listened to some streaming MP3s over broadband. Not sure if I was bored, or what, but I opened the temp sensor and saw that my temp had spiked to 46C. I shut down the boring MP3 in Media Player, and the temps settled back to normal in a minute or two.
Later, I left the machine on with only OErunning, and went out for a few hours. I came back to a screen saver, and whatever passes for a suspend mode in XP. I clicked on my user name to return to my desktop and, again out of curiosity, launched the temp software again. This time, the temp was all the way up to 52C, but it dropped to 45 in no more than 30 seconds, and did not take long after that to reach the normal 39-40C range.
I do not think that even 52C is much to worry about, but I do wonder what is going on here. Are these temperature spikes something I should worry about?
