Temps creeping up with AS5????

I've applied AS5 three times. Each time I apply it the cpu temp drops to an incredible 28C, which is great. Run it hard or let it idle and the temps stay below 32C, so I'm thinking this stuff is awesome, but within about 5 hours after the application of the AS 5 my cpu temp starts climbing up. Idle it's now 40C and when gaming it's in the mid 40's.

When I removed the HS it looked like the AS5 had been pushed out or was basically no longer covering the die. I can clearly see through to the top of the chip and also the copper in my SLK-800. As far as I know, I have applied it according to the directions each time. I've even strayed away and went from the thin spread to a BB size drop in the center and let the HS spread it around. The temps are not a problem, but I am curious to know if this is typical of AS?

Actually, you want as little thermal compound as possible between die and HS. Too much thermal compound makes poor thermal coupling. The compound's task is to fill all micro-gaps and iregularities on the HSF and the die, making the thermal coupling the best possible. (Ideally, if you have two completley plane surfaces you would not need any thermal compound.)

Probably your temps are rising beacause when you start your computer after adding the compound it has not been used for some hours and is all cool. During the first hours(s) of use, the computer slowly heats up and becomes warmer and warmer.

I hear what you are saying. I'm still trying to get my head around the concept of how I get temps in the 20's for the first 4-6 hours of use after applying the AS5, and the next time I fire it up it hits 40C within 10 minutes at idle. It does this each time I have applied the AS.

While I don't know how to fix this it does present an interesting challenge: I know my system can boot, run, and work hard for up to 5 hours with temps near 30C. The challenge is how to keep it there. It's more of a hobby. If I hadn't seen load temps of 30C I probably wouldn't be thinking about it now.

Thanks for the tip!

Ive been using AS5 for a couple months with a P4. Latest is a 3.0 running 3621 daily. The only times I notice a variance in the idle or full load temps is when room/case temps rise as well. If your case has low or poor air flow you will see your temps rise accordingly, and of course if your room temps rise as well. I cant really see someone with a 28C idle temp and a 32C full load temp, as thats pretty low for a loaded operation, especially for an Athlon/Barton. Maybe you dont run it as hard as you think you are?
My system Idles at 26C, but run D2OL loading the processor and it will jump to 40C and gradually climb as high as 43C with a Zalman all copper cooler. Shut down the load and go back to idle and its running 26C again or lower, depending on room/case temp. If you have run fully loaded for an extended period it could take your case quite a while to cool down depending on its circulation and venting capability. I have found little or no degradation of the performance of AS5 in use as of yet. AS5 however doesnt maintain a liquidy state and turns more into a solid, much like an epoxy. It can grip so tight that it can pull the processor completely off the motherboard when removing the heatsink if you dont twist the heatsink loose first. I guess you could try AS3 and see if you get a substantial operating temp difference but I think perhaps you may be expecting more than what is possible in a loaded system. Startup temps will naturally be lower due to case temps being low. Most Athlons Ive run Idle in the 40C range after they have warmed up a bit. Also a high performance video card hot hard drives, and your ram can pump up the case temps as well and affect the processor temp readings.

Now this is just my personal experience and opinion, others may have a much better answer for you.

Thanks Mastertech01 I have a 90mm fan that I will try and then I think I'll call it a done deal. I get the feeling that if I keep screwing with it I'll break something. Even if the temps were to hit 50C in the summer months it will still be well under the limit of the cpu. I just don't like heat which is why I'm trying to get it back to where it once was.

Thanks

When I first boot my NF7-S in the morning it will display a 10C lower temp than when I reboot after it has warmed up. So the first boot in the morning will heat up to 21C and stay there for 4 hours or more. But then if I restart it the temp will suddenly show 31C.
I've done some research and this is a relatively common problem with the NF7.

Thanks. I figured this one might be doing that. My only reason for testing this was because it only did it on the first boot after the AS5 had been applied. At first boot after applying the AS5 it would stay near 30 max for about 4 hours of so. The next time I fired it up, and each time since then, it hit 33 within 3 minutes and tops out in the low 40's after a good work out. It levels out at around 39C after a while. Case temps each time were within 3C of the previous. It's not as much of a big deal as it is odd, and since it will run for at least 4 hours at 30C after a fresh application of AS I figured I would see if I could get it to stay that way.

I'll try another fan later this week.

Thanks for the info!

I think I found the right combination

It looks like I needed more fan. I was using an 80mm 27.5CFM fan on my SLK-800. Swapped it with an Enermax 92mm variable speed, left it set to high and the temps are very cool. The larger fan produces much more air and is no louder than the 80mm. I played a few rounds of CoD which is all the stress it's seen so far. Cools back down to 30C. It's running stock, but now I have plenty of OC'ing head room if I decide to turn it up.

I can also validate the old saying, "There is a fine line between a hobby and mental illness."

Note: The Enermax fits stright on. No need to cock it 45 degrees, but it did take some thumb power to get the spring clips to slip over the fan housing.
