temps too high?

I just built my first computer, an athlon xp 1800 with a gigabyte 7dxr+ board and using the retail hsf that came with the processor (i know it isnt the best)

it idles around 55 or so and after gaming in gta3 or rtcw, its no more than 62. Its an antec case, with the front fan and 2 rear fans. are the temps too high? whats about the max it should go before I really need to worry? thanks

It's fine. I have very similar temps on my 1800+ and I've had no problems so far. Only be worried if you are getting constant lockups which might suggest heat problems.

That is very high for a Athlon XP, something is wrong if your are getting those high temps.


With a Stock Cooler on my Amd 1800+ I got 47idle and 50load. Are you guys using thermal paste? I dont know why you would be getting such high temps. And I even have a crappier case than yours.

im just using the thermal pad on the hsf. this was my first build and I didnt want to screw something up with thermal paste or anything.

my system runs fine. no lockups or reboots.

Do you have the same motherboard? if not, your "temps" can't be compared to yg17's temps.

Those temps are fairly high for that case and fan setup. I have an Antec SX 1000 case with 2 front and 2 rear fans, and I got 47C max load with stock HSF and standard thermal material on an Athlon 1800+. Using Arctic Silver 3 on the stock HSF, I was able to lower the CPU temps to about 45C under load. Changing the HSF to an Evercool CUD-725 (copper), I am now running at 43C max CPU temp.

But still those are some pretty high temps for a good case and fan setup. But i remeber that some motherboards temp diode thingamajiggers vary greatly from Manufacturer to Manufacturer.
