Just built my computer last week and am using MSI K7N2G-L mobo with AMD Athlon XP 2100+ at 1.73 Ghz, FSB at 133.
I'm wondering about temps, CPU is 53.0 C and System temp is 32.0 C, are these ok?

And if that question is too easy, can anyone point me to overclocking for dummies, newbies and the like??

Thanks

If those are under load (i.e. heavy 3D graphics, etc) then those are ok. If those are idle, then you need to look at getting a better HS/HSF combo.

The system temperature is OK but the CPU temperature is a bit high. If I were you I would buy a new HSF.

Post back your temps under load. You may be surprised how hot your CPU gets after an hour of number crunching. If you can't be bothered to do that see what happens to your temps after playing a new computer game for an hour or so.

I played battlefield 1942 for about 1.5 hrs today and then checked the temp when I was finished. It showed processor temp was 53 C and system was 29 C. So not much if any increase. Does anyone know what temp should be a warning for me?
Thanks for all the help.

I would be worried if my CPU was over 55c after heavy activity and over 50c if idle. Your idle temp is a little concerning. Are you sure they are accurate? Check the temp readings in the BIOS and see if they differ from the Windows reading. Your system temp is very good at 29c though

How quickly does your temp get up to 53c?

I have not been stressing my PC this evening - although it has been on a good few hours. Currently 31 sys 41.5 cpu. When under load the CPU gets up to 51c which doesn't concern me very much.

A temp of 50-55c is not going to damage your processor (don't sue if it fries tomorrow!) but it will affect its life (longevity). If you don't mind if your processor only lasts 3 years instead of 10 then don't panic about your temps. You may well upgrade the CPU in a couple of years anyway. This is only my opinion and I have no proof of these figures. What does anyone else think????? Am I wrong?

The other caveat in checking temperatures on the mobo/cpu is that onboard temperature monitors can be somewhat inconsistent from system to system. If you are having no crashes after long gameplay, no random slowdowns etc then like Cotswold cs said you are unlikely to kill the beast
