Mountain Hardware makes good tents.

Wild Country makes fantastic tents - I had a WC tent that I could literally submerge in a pool and it would only just barely leak throught the zippers a little. Hard rain, snow drifts, and run off is no problem.

North Face makes pretty decent tents, too.

All the above have lifetime warranties on materials and workmanship and they stand by them.

REI has some other good brands

Oh, yeah...Coleman makes budget tents, don't waste your money.

I also used to mountaineer/climb/backpack my ass off...but I don't anymore because the east coast doesn't have any mountains, just big hills.

I don't think the coleman tents and other cheap tents are really that bad - if you're using them in decent weather.

I personally prefer a Eureka tent when I'm backpacking, but on family vacations, we use the huge tents that were about the same price as the 2 man tent I take. (I prefer a 2-man tent over a 1 man tent for myself)

What are so good about these tents ? I know there lightweight but how are they in heavy snow, heavy rain, very windy conditions, etc ?

I think you are getting too worked up about how long a tent it going to last you. Most tents these days are going to last you a very long time if you treat them well. After each trip you must air them out so they do not get moldy from the water left over. Keep it clean, be gently with your poles, and just don't throw it around and it should be alright. I have used a 50 dollar tent from Target for about 5 years and it has been the best tent that I have ever had. It is very roomy, two vestibles for all my stuff, it's been in 15 degree weather and it's been in rainstorms and through some wind and it has held up very well. Most of the well respected brands of tents will last you a long time and they should not break the bank. Let us know if you have made a purchase yet.
