I don't know what it is about Tequila (and Wild Turkey). If I drink more than about 8 shots, I end up in a fist fight.
I can drink 20 Margaritas and I don't fight. I can shoot Maker's Mark all night and I don't fight.

speaking of tequila, aside from patron, what are the other good tequila's for shots? i'm not a huge tequila fan on general, but man patron shots go down super smooth when chilled. i want to get a bottle of tequila before my trip to the beach next weekend, but i don't know if i want to spend that much for a bottle of patron, so i'm just wondering what other types are smooth. there are so many out there it's hard to know what is smooth and what isn't.

Cazadores and Herradura make quality tequilas without the marketing/hype surcharge you get with Patron.

Patron is overrated; there are plenty of tequilas half the price that are better in pure flavor. I'm partial to Cazadores Resposado myself; Milagro Resposado is also very good and slightly cheaper. Herradura and Don Julio are also very nice (in general, you'll probably want a resposado, as it doesn't have the harshness of a blanco, but they generally have more character than an añejo which ends up taking on a lot of woodiness in the aging process).

cool thanks DT4K and Atomic Playboy, i might check out those 2 brands you both mentioned. i actually have a bottle of milagro anejo that i got in cancun back in 2010 or 2011, still sealed heh.

when you get a "shot of patron" at the club or bar, any idea what kind it typically is, as far as anejo, blano, and resposado? cause i got no clue the difference between that, i just know the shots i take when i'm out, when chilled, are really smooth. they are always clear too.

They're probably blanco shots as it's what most folks seem to expect. Another tequila that I'd suggest would be 1800. It has some marketing hype but I find it to be a good tequila for the money.

When you order a generic tequila at a bar, it's almost always blanco unless all they have is a resposado/anejo in the brand you specify. Milagro anejo is excellent, you should enjoy it. It's doubly good if you store it in the freezer before taking shots; chilled tequila is awesome.

If you get a shot of tequila at a bar it will almost always be blanco. Mixed drinks will be blanco or reposado (usually). Anejo comes on the rocks like a whiskey.

Patron is certainly better than cheap tequilas like sauza or cuervo, don't mind the haters. Julio and Herradura are also really good... and honestly if i go out in NYC, or Atlantic City its not like patron is more expensive than those. Its either cuervo as the special for like 4 bucks or any decent brand for 10-12 bucks a shot.

I've been using 1800, fairly good for the price I think. I use Cointreau and fresh lime in mine and they turn out pretty good. They are strong.

Never got into 1800... or lowlands tequilas in general (besides julio (edit meant herra), probably marketing in my head).

so if i am looking for something that isn't as expensive as patron but is similar in taste/quality as the shots i get at the bar, would you recommend getting the blanco then? or do you still recommend the other kind? just wondering since that is really all i will be using it for - taking shots. i don't really plan on margaritas with them. just taking some shots here and there.

Milagro is the way to go. $17 a bottle here.

And a margarita only has three ingredients. Tequila, Cointreau and lime juice.

Sauza Blue is pretty good, not overly expensive 100% Agave Tequila that is excellent for mixing. It's a blanco, but a clear notch above their Sauza Blanco.

Sauza's Hornitos line of Tequilas are great values when drunk straight, and not so expensive that you wouldn't want to use them in cocktails.

I agree with this, but for most people Triple Sec isn't sweet enough on it's own.

purbeast, 1800 or Cazadores is what I'd recommend. Not terribly price (like $23 a bottle) and pretty good. Don Julio is pretty good as well, but it is about the cost of Patron (and is much better). Oh, and if you want to go cheap, Sauza is the best cheap tequila IMO.

but what type of cazadores would you all recommend if i like the clear shots of patron i get at the bars? the blanco? or will the anejo or reposado be better? i guess that is where my confusion also comes in heh. i just see so many kinds of teqiula that im like wtf? cause i've really only had like house margaritas, but for shots, i've only had patron.

Añejos and reposados taste nothing like blancos, so if you enjoy the blanco shots of Patron, stick with a blanco.

Or ... live a little and try something new.

Well, the only difference between the three is the amount of time they spend aging in oak casks. A blanco is unaged; it's going to be the harshest. Resposados age a little, take on a little color, and mellow a little. Anejos age for a long time and take on more oakiness. Personally, I'm a fan of resposados for sipping (or shooting); they've got a similar flavor, but less burn and more balance. You can sip them comfortably, or shoot them if that's your thing.

If you're really sold on the tequila burn, get a blanco. They happen to be the cheapest of any given brand, so if that's your preference, it's a money saver.

That's one way of looking at it, but "harsh" and "mellow" aren't exactly how I'd phrase it. Blancos have more raw tequila/agave flavor and less of the flavors imparted by the aging vessel. I too prefer reposados and añejos. To me, añejos often resemble bourbon, with the same sorts of flavor tones, such as vanilla, fruit or coffee. Personally, for the cost, I'd much rather drink a nice bourbon.

Personal preference. You'll need to try both. I prefer reposado in margaritas. And on its own.

this is a thread about tequila and people asking for advice/opinions from those who have had a lot of tequila and know about it - no need to be a dick about it.

as far as my questions, i think i will give the respado stuff a try to see how it goes. if it's less harsh than the blanco stuff i've been having, then that will only be a better thing most likely.

i guess it is kind of like some rums i've had before, and some age longer than just have a less harsh taste and go smoother. i'm not sure if anyone is familiar with flor de cana, but they have a ton of different aged stuff, and that is one rum i've had various aged ones and while i like them all, the more expensive ones (older) definitely are smoother.

Minneapolis has a great tequila bar called Barrio. Long, long, long list of tequilas and we've yet to try one we didn't care for. Staff usually have great recommendations, too.

I love good tequila.
