I got to level 23 on my slayer about a week ago but I haven't played since D3 came out. It gets a lot harder once you get into the early 20s, You actually have to dodge while questing or else you'll be spending a lot of time healing/dead. The BAM fights are a lot of fun though, tried to solo a few and managed to kill a basilisk and one of the fat guys (kumas?) on my own but I couldn't kill the naga warriors. I played through the first dungeon and it was super easy and seemed really disorganized, I don't think our lancer payed very much attention to what was going on and eventually left but we finished it with 4 people.

played the mystic some more this morning and got the thrall and some more spells. definitely more interesting now.

Seems like I kill much faster now. Even better than the sorc, plus I can heal myself if needed.

don't think i'm going to be playing this one past the free 30 days.

I appreciate that they are trying to be a bit different in the mmo genre but some stuff i think they did different just to be different when the "old" way worked much better.

Any examples? I've been playing for awhile and the combat system is easily better than anything currently on the market and that is the most "different" thing I can think of.

Somewhat agree, after 50+ hrs on D3 and 1 weekend of GW2, Tera's combat still feels way more engaging & satisfying - players get properly rewarded for paying attention and punished for blind button mashing...but it's hard to recommend the game to friends though, other than dungeons and big monsters everything else gets stale quick.

Combat system is purely subjective. I thought the combat system would be cool, but i really don't like it that much. Probably partly because of forced hotkey use. I think the "difference" is going to wear off quickly. Kind of like the Wii, I think it's just a gimmick and people are only going to it now because it is different.

some of the issues i have:

FORCING me to use hotkeys.

it costs mana to block, and blocking is on a cool down timer and/or only last a few seconds.

the mystic has a pet. it only lasts 10 minutes. no way to tell when it will end.

making the pet attack or follow you costs mana. The pet cannot defend you. You HAVE to tell it what to do. If it's done attacking it's target and you're still fighting, you have to take time to "cast" the pet attack skill again. why can't it just keep fighting?

the map blows

Everyone looks exactly the same, at least for most of the lower levels. Every piece of armor and weapon is the same, exept it might be a different color.

HP and mana regen is extremely slow. Yes, they have items that drop from enemies that will regen this, but they are few and far between imo or never drop when you really need them. There's bandages which heal so little at a time it's not even funny. Some classes have spells to help, but again, it seems so negligible and there's a 10 sec (i think) cool down.

stamina always dropping when you fight and requiring to use a fire pit to restore it.

I'm not a fan of fighting groups of monsters at a time. SWTOR did this too. It's impossible to block all of those little mobs. Yeah, they don't do a lot of damage but sometimes there are a shit ton of them and that adds up quick.
Some classes can handle this much better than others.

Lancer and Priest attack aiming is wonky. You have to aim almost perfectly to score hits. This happens with Slayer and Berserker too, but not as much imo. the attack speed is super slow, especially if you miss or the enemy steps back out of range or something. I get that Slayer and Berserker are wielding huge weapons and they are heavy. do they have to be so huge too?

The female characters all pretty much look like sluts. The armor is super skimpy. You're a tank and only 10% of your body is clothed/armored? Not that I mind hot chicks in skimpy outfits, but sometimes its just really stupid. Most of the male characters look like they stepped out of a Gay Twilight Calendar model shoot.

The enemies - tree, horned tree, enraged tree, diseased tree, magic tree, chieftan tree. Plus the designs of some of these monsters are horrible.

Elin and Popori -nuff said

I don't care about the story AT ALL. other than some bad monsters coming to some island, i can't tell you a single damn thing about whats going on or what I am fighting for.

Pegasi going into warp speed - not a major issue but a big WTF the first time I saw it

Combat system is purely subjective.

Yeah, its a system you'll either love, or not so much. I love it, but I dont know about its long term stamina. Of course, I'm not one to play an mmo for years at a time anymore, so I'm probably not the best to comment on that.

FORCING me to use hotkeys.

Heh, I've never been one to use many hotkeys in mmo's. This was a big change for me. I ended up doing a severe remap of keys (especially since I dont use wasd, I use sdfc). Once I finally got hotkeys I was comfortable with (i use qwerty for my skills, and then extended bar 1-7), the game got much more manageable.

it costs mana to block, and blocking is on a cool down timer and/or only last a few seconds.

I play a berskerer as my main. I'm not one to really go in depth on the mechanics of a game (I'm more likely just to play however I want, and If I totally suck, then so be it), but I've never noticed a cooldown timer on my block. If it has one, its really short.

The mana part you just get used to. My berserker loses mana all the time, even when just standing around. Default mana is 0. I have skills to regain mana, and all regular attacks build mana. You can even glyph block to give you mana every time a block is successfull. Mana for my berserker isn't really that big of an issue, really.

the mystic has a pet. it only lasts 10 minutes. no way to tell when it will end.

I do really wish the pets would give you a buff with a timer, so you could see when they end. But, the nice thing is you can recast the pet at any time, and the old pet will die and a new one gets summoned. It may change later on, but it doesn't cost that much mana to resummon at low levels. I usually end up recasting the pet after 5 minutes or so, just to make sure i dont lose the pet in the middle of a fight. That being said, more than once, I'll have to fend of mobs petless because I lost track of time

making the pet attack or follow you costs mana. The pet cannot defend you. You HAVE to tell it what to do. If it's done attacking it's target and you're still fighting, you have to take time to "cast" the pet attack skill again. why can't it just keep fighting?

Since I haven't played a caster up to higher levels, I dunno how bad mana gets. But, i seriously dont have a mana problem at lower levels (through, say, 25). So, I really dont have much comment on the mana part, except to say, so?

It would be nice if the pet would auto attack other members of a group after you send it after the first mob of the group though. The pet WILL attack any mob that hits you, without being told (and not swing and a miss mind you, but actually touches you with an attack). The pet controls could use some work though.

the map blows

hrm, wouldnt know. I never pull the regular map up. There is a smaller, transparent map you pull up by pressing n instead of m. I keep that one up all time, so I never actually have to use the regular map.

The hp regen does take alot of getting used to (see above about my thoughts on mana though). I've gotten used to carrying around alot of bandages. Usually slapping one or 2 on after a fight and you're good to go again. They aren't cheap, but the cost becomes less of an issue in the upper 20's, low 30's.

I think most people would say "just don't get hit ", since the game revolves around action combat, the goal is to not take damage at all. I'm not a good enough player to never get hit though, so I wont tell you that

stamina always dropping when you fight and requiring to use a fire pit to restore it.

This seemed like it was going to be a big issue at first, but I found out it's not really. Usually charging back up to full doesn't take that long, and there are plenty of free campfires scattered through the game. For those times I need one at a non campfire place, I get plenty of campfire loot drops, so I dont have to spend money on them

I'm not a fan of fighting groups of monsters at a time. SWTOR did this too. It's impossible to block all of those little mobs. Yeah, they don't do a lot of damage but sometimes there are a shit ton of them and that adds up quick.
Some classes can handle this much better than others.

Not a big fan of it either. I am, however, used to it. Been doing it since the first everquest, although most game save that for groups instead of solo. But, there are plenty of games I've played made me do it solo (city of heroes and everquest 2 come to mind).

I still prefer 1on1 fights though.

Aiming definately takes getting used to. And, all the classes are different. So, if you're playing multiple classes at the same time, you might not ever get used to it. Probably best to stick to one class at a time.

And the problem is? Yeah, not very realistic. AT ALL. I happen to like it that way though. I do understand the complaint, however.

The enemies - tree, horned tree, enraged tree, diseased tree, magic tree, chieftan tree. Plus the designs of some of these monsters are horrible.

I dont mind the designs. But, there definately could use MORE designs. You'll see the same mob, upgrade 5 times, during 5 of your levels. More variety please.

Elin and Popori -nuff said

Well, yeah, i dont want to make either of those 2 races for personal play

I don't care about the story AT ALL. other than some bad monsters coming to some island, i can't tell you a single damn thing about whats going on or what I am fighting for.

Heh, I dont know anyone who thinks the story is top notch in this game. Definately NOT the draw of this game.

Leveling up (lvl 59 now) one thing that bothers me about the zones are how linear they are. You basically follow a path through some sort of canyon to each new quest hub or outpost. I understand the logistics but I'm looking back at some WoW zones and they were way more open (think Wesftall). You could cut across a zone to get where you needed to go. In Tera you have to follow the 'path'.

Server population also seems to be really dropping lately as well.

A quick question to the Tera users here. Recently started playing this game with my GF.

Have any of you guys noticed your GPU's getting hot? It seems this game pushes my GPU harder (even though it doesn't load it as much) as some other games I play.

Curious if there as video setting I should avoid, ie like Ultra Shadows in the old WoW days where it was a huge performance his for very little visible IQ gains.

Thanks.

No issue with vidcard. I'm running 2560x1600 with a 680 and it's smooth.

Patch today. New instance and nexus!

Haven't noticed any issues with my video card either. And I'm running with everything set to max, at 1920x1080.

I did run into something strange yesterday though. right after I finished up a mob fight, suddenlty hitting my move forward key (d) would minimize tera and i'd be back at the desktop.

Ended up just logging off and rebooting my computer, since it had been about a month since the last reboot. Didn't log back on yet to see if that took care of it or not

I got sidetracked with D3 but going back to leveling this weekend. I am level 33 i think on my Sorc. Did they put the dragonskin weapons in yet? I got a email about a Federation kit yesterday, is that it or something else?

Thanks

My friend had the same issue with the minimizing. He isn't sure how it happened, all he remembers is his cat jumping on the keyboard and hitting a bunch of keys and after that whenever he hit (d) it would take him to the desktop. Could be something with the Windows key, since Win + D takes you to the desktop.

I'm not subbing and I'm ashamed for being scammed when I bought this game. No endgame, no battlegrounds (they were heavily advertised) and no goals at all. It's like playing a single player.

BTW good luck to those ppl having issues with EME and Frogster. I heard EME is turning autosubbing on and making unsubbing impossible while Frogster is banning legit cd-keys for no reason. Way to go management wise.

So happy for being done with this game.

I'm up to level 45, whoo boy the leveling has slowed down considerably. Really hoping I can push on to level 60... never played an mmo past level 10 so this is new ground for me.

Picked up this game on sale ($8) at Best Buy last Friday. So far I've leveled a Slayer and Warrior to level 9 or 10, and I'm not sure which character to play.

I haven't had any significant issues with the warrior yet, but the fact that they try to make it so scary on the character selection screen (5 star difficulty) has me thinking maybe I should stick with the slayer. I definitely prefer the faster attack speed dual wielding over the huge sword with slow animations of the slayer though.

Anyone have any experience/comments on leveling/playing a warrior outside of the beginner island?

seems to be my luuck with mmos lately - can't find anyone to play with, even after joining a guild.

I have a lvl 51 warrior currently. They are fun. The five star difficulty mostly refers to if you want to play them as a tank. Warriors are pretty much the only "hybrid" choice in TERA where they can either dps or tank, except tanking is difficult. You have to tank through dodges and moves with invincibility animation frames mostly which is hard, especially at lower levels when you don't have all the abilities yet.

However if you play them as dps, which most people do, they are relatively straight forward. The fast attack speed makes them useful for shutting down casters and a lot of their moves involve movement which is fun.

here is what higher lvl dpsing looks like
lvl 47 warrior dps

I have a level 49 Warrior, I tank mostly because there are so few Lancers around. Love tanking with Warrior, but would be bored stiff playing a Lancer.

I made it to 54 on my sorcerer and completely lost interest. The questing is mind-numbingly boring, and I don't see much in the end game worth grinding up to 60 for.

It's a cool MMO, and fans of the genre should check it out just to try its new approach to combat. There's not much to sink your teeth into otherwise. With some proper competitive PvP objectives it would be a lot more interesting.

Anyone still play Tera? I loved Tera's combat system...made running dungeons and PVP so much more fun. I just played WOW yesterday for the first time after playing Tera pretty hardcore for a few months and just couldn't stomach WOW's combat compared to Tera. I quit Tera before they rolled out battlegrounds....anyone try them? Worth coming back for?

There is only one map. It's ok if you like pvp.

And I will not play another MMO again unless it has Tera's combat.

That said I don't play much anymore. The whole run dungeons over and over and then spend thousands of gold to enchant just gets tiring after each new patch and having to start over.

I definitely feel the same way...I ran a few of the classic WOW dungeons and battlegrounds yesterday and just couldn't get into it due to the tab-target combat system. Having to dodge and aim your attacks like in Tera...makes combat much more interesting and lively. I felt like a monkey just mashing buttons going back to a tab-target system. Too bad Tera didn't have their shit together at launch with battlegrounds and more things to do end-game....that whole Nexus thing sucked at end-game.
