Well I managed to get the updated driver installed by doing a "manual" update rather than the nVidia supplied auto-update.

This has revealed another problem (although a quick game of L4D2 was actually not too bad). In the 2D situation such as scrolling down this thread the moving portion of the screen flickers - when stationary all is fine.

This seems like ATI drivers 8~10 years ago....any ideas?

Check and report the clockspeeds (memory, core, and shader) of the card. I'd recommend using MSI Afterburner. It will monitor you clockspeeds continuously, so you can see how it performs in 2D and 3D over a time graph.

Also you might have some bad Windows files. I recommend running chkdisk. Go to My Computer -> Right click on C: drive -> Properties -> Tools -> Error checking. Schedule a check and then restart. It will probably take an hour or two.

Core Clock = 550Mhz
Memory Clock = 1700Mhz
Shader Clock = 1340

I'll run the error checking overnight then.

Well I just created a server match with 20 players in CS:S and it's basically unplayable - framerates are way too slow and you can't aim at anything as a result - woeful!

Bots eat CPU cycles and your CPU is already having a hard enough time with the game. Join an online match and then see if it performs any better.

Your clocks look on target. How are your temps?

Op its the drivers . I said it again. and I was right, LFD2 playing better, thank you.

You are truly hilarious. I'm rolling. You are so clueless. You so desperately want to be right! And why? You think that makes me wrong? It doesn't, because you don't even understand the points I was making! Ahahahahaha.

SO it was better with the 9600gt?

Not wonderful with the 9600GT but somewhat better - I'l reinstall it tomorrow and see if it helps at all.

I should probably use some sort of benchmarking tool I suppose - any suggestions? I'm totally out of the loop these days...

it could be that gt240 is defective.

I think your CPU is fine and GPU is fine, at least to be in somewhat playable state(CSS is an oold game which should run fine with ur setup). but from the description, it seems to be a software problem.

I had similar problem long time ago with an agp card with wrong chipset driver but not sure if thats the case with your mobo.

If possible update chipset driver as well.

9600GT=GT240. You should have asks us before you bought it.

You running a Athlon 3500? If so thats your problem.
A faster video card probrobly will not help.

DId you install the latest drivers for the gt240 on the Nvidia website?

http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-32bit-260.99-whql-driver.html

you linked the correct drivers, but it is missing install instructions:
1. press agree and continue.
2. select "custom install" and press next
3. Check the box that says "clean install" and press next
4. agree to everything and restart the PC the when done.

Also, I agree with those who say that you really need to upgrade other aspects of your system.

Theres gotta be something up. Back in the day I played cs:s on lowest settings with a 2ghz p4, 512mbs of ram, and an fx5200(yea). Maybe its changed since then but i don't think so. In fact my next computer with and A64 3200+, 1gb of ram, and 6600gt ran it at full settings without breaking a sweat.

i think the problem is 939's single core don't have performance for GT 240.

and the CSS from back in the day is not the same as the one today. The engine is now very multithreaded.

9600gt pretty much equals gt240 but main prob is the AMD Athlon 64 3500. I used to have one and although they are good processors if you get a Dual Core (I bought a Athlon64 X2) processor your games will perform better. For an example of the performance gain you will get:-

http://www.ultimatehardware.net/304.htm

This review features Athlon64 3500 and Athlon64 X2 4200.

This.

It is like saying "But WoW used to run just fine on my Intel IGP five years ago, now it is a slideshow on the same rig." That's because the game changed.

Your processor is going to hold back 3DMark06 scores, but even so what you posted seems a bit low. With a decent processor you should be getting a total score of around 9000. So we can't really judge what your score means since your system is different than other systems with similar video cards.

Also... it looks like the board is socket AM2. A CPU upgrade would make sense for you. The board probably only supports Windsor cores and maybe some Brisbanes.

Let us know when you do this.

Like was already posted, the 9600GT is slightly faster but you should see them as almost the same in-game.

Four issues here:

-Slow CPU
-Not enough memory
-The new GPU is the same speed as the old GPU
-GPU Driver issues (potential issue)

You need the latest drivers for Anandtech. Probably a quad core cpu. Are you using Pupkin ram? Those are the best

Potentially even five issues... one of the people here reported that the specific game the OP is testing with has issues.
