Terror alert level.

Is it really necessary for the average American to know of the terror alert level? The point of it is to ready us for imminent threats. Average Joe American doesn't get a city or a finicial district ready for one. Shouldn't this information be limited to FBI, Police, and Administration of these areas in the form of private breifings? Not only to rid us of this "fear culture", but also to not reveal what we know of these imminent threats.

The terror levels don't really mean much to the average citizen. However, they are pretty much forced to inform us of potential threats so that if something does happen we can't say that we were informed.

Of course if we get hit we'll still blame the government for not preventing it.

Its a ridiculous system. We'll never be at low so that level is ridiculous; and we'll probably never be at severe except for during a large scale attack. They don't want to drop it to guarded because that would seem like they're not working and high seems too high because then if we're hit we have to raise it to severe. So elevated it is.

<tinfoil hat>The point is to divert the public attention. Threats? Sure. </tinfoil hat>

Damn hippies. It's a coincidence. The last 20 times there was something bad about Bush in the media or international press and it went up was COINCIDENCE. Damn newagers.

It's pure psi-ops. Used to control and fear the sheep. "You are going to die! But go to work and shop! Death is near, don't vote unless you support the war president! Stay home, go spend money!"

Heh, that point reminds me of the Berger scandal. It is very interesting that another 'major' female kidnapping is all over the news just after the Berger scandal broke!

If some attack were to occur, and the Local FBI director, Chief of Police, and Mayor came out and said "Yes we knew about it, but were unfortunately unable to prevent it." That would be enough for me to believe.

I honestly wonder how much valuable information terrorists get from watching CNN.

Everyone talks about the "fear factor." Are you guys actually scared? If so than you're a bunch of puss*es. They release those alerts and no one cares, I dont know anyone that is afraid.

Either way people will blame the government. If they warn people they are just inducing "teh ph3ar faxtor," if they say nothing than they should have warned us. Just go about your life and quit worrying about stuff so much. If most of you people treat the people around you like you treat the people on these boards, you're more likely to have someone shoot you in the mouth for being a dumb a$$, then dying to a terrorist attack.

edit: spelling

Heh. I just find it funny that people on here talk so much sh*t to people that disagree with them. I know that if they were in person, they wouldnt dare say the same things. I'm not pointing fingers at any certain side, it happens on both sides. I've not seen one civil discussion on these boards. The internet is the biggest equalizer the world has ever seen. It gives people with inferiority complexes the ability to act superior, and it alows people who would never call others a name to their face a way to do it without suffering the consequences. I just think it's a funny phenomenon.

You know as well as I do that if you talked to people in real life like you talk to people on these boards, an a$$ whipping would soon follow.

I do though. But most people can debate without violence, at least if you don't drag you knuckles when you walk.

It's effective and necessary. Better to act on possible threats then not say anything and have somthing happen. Then try to explain to the public why they didn't.

WTF are you talking about? I meant the terror alert system is simply CYA for the government, and not much use to people.

Like Fear, vote Republican.

A stance on any issue can be reduced to an element of fear regarding that issue. This goes for gay rights, abortion, taxes, health care, terrorism, international relations, etc.

I don't know about you, but if I was one of the 100,000 employees working in those financial institutions right now, I might be a little unnerved.

Exactly. And the fact that the alerts are so centralized even worries me just a bit. I'm not 'scared', so to speak, but I don't see why our government would haphazardly warn specific countries. Besides, according to the New York Times, a captured Al Qaeda computer engineer provided the heads up.
