This is wrong. The point of having a terror alert level is to keep Americans on-edge, in order to make us think we "need" this BS "security" so the Shrub Regime stands a chance of reelection. The raising and lowering is somewhat random (somewhat but not totally -- you can be sure of level orange or red in October), and is intended to induce a state of anxiety. The real basis has nothing to do with "imminent threats".

As such, it unfortunately seems to be working pretty well.

RNC in NYC.

The pubs need to whip up a frenzy before the convention. A good four weeks of scaring should get New Yorkers primed and ready. Then they'll show the towers going down over and over again in an effort to freak out the NY citizens. Then the pubs hope that New Yorkers vote for him in November.

Kinda simplistic I know. But the K.I.S.S. method IS in effect.

ineffective, unnecessary

it might be useful for police or others that may change their procedures according to the terror level but I'm sick of hearing that the threat level has been raised or lowered, means nothing to me

You can write it off as fear or paranoia, but raising the threat level does make people a helluva lot more aware of their surroundings. Obviously, if you work in IT tech support in Kansas you have nothing to worry about. But if you work in New York, the heads up can be useful. I work a block away from the NYSE, and I can tell you that people were significantly more awake on the subways this morning than on normal days. Yea, it's probably paranoia, but it gets the average schmoe thinking about his/her security.

I think, and not that it matters, spreading the word via the upper channels in those areas and a word-of-mouth through the lower channels would be more effective and make capturing a terrorist that much easier. Of course, all security throughout those buildings would be notified and be on high alert, but by telling every 9 to fiver, you may just be giving away the one or more of the sources of intelligence. By keeping it "on the down low" and notifying the local authorities also, you can do a better job of stopping a terrorist act IMO.

Fear is what the statists, such as Bush use to stay in power, this "terror alert system" is just one aspect of this.

What a senseless response. I could only imagine where we'd be if Gore had been elected President and had to deal with 9/11. Say all the bad things you want about Pres. Bush and how things are being carried out. Point being, Gore would not have been able to take on what Bush has done so far.

Add the fact that Kerry has done little if anything as a Senator for Taxachusettes in his whole career in that position, I fail to see little difference on how he would carry things out any better than they have already been carried out.

Finally, in life there is a good saying: "Be careful what you ask for ... you just might get it."
