OK, so here's the thing:

1. Elon isn't dumb

2. As far as I know, there are no other new products in the pipeline for Tesla - everything has been announced & unveiled at this point, which means that the hype is going to die down. Maybe FSD will actually come sooner rather than later & generate some buzz, but we've already got the S, X, 3, Y, Roadster 2.0, semi-truck, cybertruck, ATV, etc., so it's all about keeping the sales going now & ramping up production for the Y, 2.0, truck, and so on

3. So if I were a marketer, I would do something to create hype, like make a horrifically ugly conceptual design that is guaranteed to be divisive - #cybertruck has been trending on Twitter since last nice, so that's already working! Bonus points for breaking the window, because it's just more worldwide news & free marketing - people aren't going to be talking about the shattered window, so much as how strong the body is & how strong the windows will eventually be

4. Then, later on, down the road - since I'd imagine only refreshes are planned at this point (S, X, etc.) - offer a redesigned pickup truck with better body lines that more people can swallow. This does two things: tells people that Tesla "listens to the people" & that they care, and also gets more people attracted to the design, because it actually looks good. But the specs are already out there, pre-orders are already out there, buzz is already out there, and people love it when things get tweaked in a positive way, like the recent Sonic the Hedgehog movie redesign for the title character.

Elon knows he needs to keep the hypebeast rolling, and the biggest way to make waves is to do something crazy & then tweak it later.

Concept looks like total ass... like the actual geometry hasn't rendered in yet.

I legitimately thought the reveal was a joke and that the real one was going to roll out afterward.

You could sleep with climate control and a fridge. Then you'll need to get it towed to the nearest charger.
I like EVs but I honestly wouldn't want to take one out into the wilderness and use anything that draws power from the batteries. In fact I wouldn't be that comfortable taking one into the wilderness even without using any excess power, it's not like you can take a couple of jerry cans full of electricity with you.

Rivian is doing something similar - kitchen setup with the R1T: https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/17/rivian-debuts-a-pull-out-kitchen-for-its-electric-pickup-trick/

This Jalop said it best:

Part of me admires the brutality of it, the raw unedited and unrefined brutalism of it speaks to me.

However, the other part of me has eyes.

The windshield is the worst part; it's wayyyyy too big. Give any 10 year old who can draw a pencil and paper and immediately get a better look in 5 minutes.

"Will be an option to add solar power that generates 15 miles per day, possibly more. Would love this to be self-powered. Adding fold out solar wings would generate 30 to 40 miles per day. Avg miles per day in US is 30." - Elon

So if you're, say, 100 miles in the wilderness with no charge because you ran the aircon all night it'll take you 7 days to get back using solar?

I’m driving down to the beach and parking at state park campsite and plugged into 50 amp like all other RVs. I’m not going to be 100 miles in complete wilderness. If I was, I wouldn’t be wasting energy on purpose. But solar option from Tesla would be super cool. Cybertruck just killed Rivian IMO.

In that situation why not use a campervan rather than sleeping in the bed of a pickup truck?

Yeah, the more I look at this with my marketing hat on, the more sense this makes:

1. Elon doesn't believe in paid marketing

2. He just got $100 million dollar's worth of advertising for free. His truck is literally on every news website right now, trending as a hashtag on every single social media platform, and non-Tesla fans & even non-car-fans are talking about it. He has 2 years to fix the design & the windows...genius marketing move!

He took a 3-pronged approach:

1. Ugly, divisive aesthetic design

2. Broken windows in the demonstration

3. ATV shown with zero details

What does that do?

1. Get everyone talking about the ugly truck that has a 500-mile battery, goes 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds, and starts at $39k

2. Gets everyone talking about the bulletproof metal & shatterproof windows - windows that can be "fixed" by engineering down the road

3. Gets everyone talking about the electric ATV (maybe) that fits in the back, because there's no details about it - can you pre-order it? Does the truck come with it? What's the battery range?

Side note, I'm pretty sure the truck design didn't get leaked because they 3D printed it the night before, which is why it looks so angular LOL

Be interesting to see how this goes in crash testing as well.
Theres pretty strict rules on how cars interact with squishy humans or other cars in the EU, I'm wondering how it's going to be bullet proof but not pedestrian skull proof!
