OK, so here's the thing:
1. Elon isn't dumb
2. As far as I know, there are no other new products in the pipeline for Tesla - everything has been announced & unveiled at this point, which means that the hype is going to die down. Maybe FSD will actually come sooner rather than later & generate some buzz, but we've already got the S, X, 3, Y, Roadster 2.0, semi-truck, cybertruck, ATV, etc., so it's all about keeping the sales going now & ramping up production for the Y, 2.0, truck, and so on
3. So if I were a marketer, I would do something to create hype, like make a horrifically ugly conceptual design that is guaranteed to be divisive - #cybertruck has been trending on Twitter since last nice, so that's already working! Bonus points for breaking the window, because it's just more worldwide news & free marketing - people aren't going to be talking about the shattered window, so much as how strong the body is & how strong the windows will eventually be
4. Then, later on, down the road - since I'd imagine only refreshes are planned at this point (S, X, etc.) - offer a redesigned pickup truck with better body lines that more people can swallow. This does two things: tells people that Tesla "listens to the people" & that they care, and also gets more people attracted to the design, because it actually looks good. But the specs are already out there, pre-orders are already out there, buzz is already out there, and people love it when things get tweaked in a positive way, like the recent Sonic the Hedgehog movie redesign for the title character.
Elon knows he needs to keep the hypebeast rolling, and the biggest way to make waves is to do something crazy & then tweak it later.
