I generally agree with Matt Farah on automotive things he likes. I also agree with him on automotive things he hates.

I'm waiting for the time when America collectively stands back, looks at the Cybertruck, and all agree this vehicle truly is awful. Faith restored.

I don't think he's wrong in his review. I think the Cybertruck is like a Corvette: it's not a car designed to be practical, it's a car designed to be loved by its target audience. It's an answer to a problem that doesn't exist. It's weird, it's something different, and it's cool in it's own way. My neighbor has a Corvette: it's small inside, it's hard to get into, and it scrapes on our shared entry driveway because it's so low to the ground. And yet, he doesn't care about ANY of that, because he's an enthusiast & he just plain likes it! Like Matt said, more power to you if you're into it!

I still remember my original take on it from 5 years ago, when it was revealed:

Nov 21, 2019:

I got used to the weirdness of the design over time, although I didn't like some of the changes they had to do to get it into production. But like I said earlier, I was interested in a 500-mile battery version, and it fell short in both range & price expectations. $116,000 for a 470-mile range with a battery backpack that eats up 1/3 of the trunk space is...disappointing.

I've had four Corvettes. Their impracticality as an everyday road car is centered around it being a sports car. It's a great affordable sports car with several generations attracting a wide range of people.

I wonder if the design of the Cybertruck will be loved by their owners once the novelty wears off. Right now there is a uniqueness to them. People that love it today cling on to the novelty as a barrier to all the negativity surrounding the vehicle. Will they relent and see what others see when that wears off?

At least with a Corvette you have a sleek sports car with broad appeal despite there being tens of thousands of them made a year. It has well regarded performance characteristics that has kept it alive for over 70 years.

I do think the Cybertruck's attractiveness is very niche. Personally, I did NOT like it at first, then it grew on me, as I do like weird cars. But there are some design changes I wasn't crazy about, so I prefer the pre-production prototype, for sure. I wonder not only how people who like them will like them down the road, but also once they start becoming commonplace & you see them everywhere.

tbh, the biggest turn-off for me would be the attention. Nobody takes a second look at my current cars & I like it that way lol.

3. I then test-drove the F-150 Lightning EV. To date, this is my favorite car I've driven, EV or ICE. Just a really remarkable vehicle. My only complaint is the limited range, which will probably be addressed in the future as battery tech improves.

My original main interest in the Cybertruck was for the giant battery, which kinda-sorta exists with the battery backpack boosting it to 470 miles (...for an extra $16k). I'm not particular interested in having a truck outside of that. tbh, due to the extreme price hikes (going from $40k to $60k for the base...I mean, you could buy an entire brand-new Subaru Impreza for that lol), that kind of changed the financial conversation quite a bit imo. I'd probably sooner end up upgrading to a V8 Mustang haha.

Did you ever test drive a Rivian? I would think a Rivian R1T with the Max Pack would get you that 400+ mile range you are looking for in a pickup? Or the Chevy Silverado EV that has 440 Mile range.

Exactly. far different. Cybertruck doesn't hold a candle to the Corvette as far as design.

Even as far as driving the motor trend comparison shows a cyber truck is like a beta. Compared to well-designed trucks in the EV space like the rivian, The Cyber truck gets mopped up. They summed it up by saying sure if you love Elon it might work for you but that novelty is going to wear off faster and there's not much left.

The Cyber truck is an Elon big dick hype train. Some people get turned on by that.

I feel really bad for the family that guys who buy this shitstorm drive around then. It must be so embarrassing for the kids.

My buddy has one, but I haven't had time to stop by yet. Very, very cool machine tho.

Mostly I wanted 500 miles as a mythical number to eliminate range anxiety. I figure with 500 miles, even if I only get 250 real miles between weather swings, highway driving, using the A/C & heat, etc., I'm still covered for a few hours of driving each day. Not really interested in a truck (which is why the Rivian wasn't particularly interesting to me), as much as the range. But now the $70k 500-mile Cybertruck is a $116k 470-mile Cybertruck haha.

As far as 2024 range goes, the Lucid Air Grand Touring has 516 advertised miles for $112k, but tbh I don't really want a sedan. Or a $2,000/mo car payment to save on gas LOL.

The Smoking Tire review with Matt linked above had some appalling shots of the build quality...giant wavy interior dashboard deck, super misaligned panels, etc. Disturbing in a $100k vehicle! I'm curious to see if they're going to be able to figure those out, because from what I understand, the other modern Tesla vehicles still have similar issues.

Finally, a car where it truly belongs, among the shittiest of people, to evoke the slave owning confederate flag waving trash. Imagine that, a car designed from the ground up to fit right in with these folks. I have never seen such a perfect synergy of bullshit. A car literally made for those kind of people. It's sociologically fascinating. Movements have co-opted objects sure, but this is like a custom build for them.

But you still want one, just not for $116k. We'll just have to wait and see what depreciation* is like once they sell hundreds of thousands of these a year. That's still gonna happen, right?

As for the QC issues you mentioned, in theory some of that should be solvable. Since they're producing about 10% more vehicles than they can sell, and inventory is piling up, there's no longer any reason for their customary end of quarter production blitz.

* Caveat emptor

Physically solvable yes, culturally solvable, company-wise...I'm curious if Tesla will ever actually get the quality issues worked out. It seems like their quality has improved over the last year or so with stuff like the Model Y's, but for a long time, people used "Delivery Checklist 2.0" & would then send it back to the local Tesla shop upon delivery to fix all of the issues they had out the door because they were trying to meet delivery numbers.

Definitely still want a Cybertruck! I like weird cars...had a Beetle, an OG Kia Soul, 4-cylinder Mustang, etc. I didn't care for some of the production design changes they made, but overall, it's such a nutty design, I love it haha. But it'd be nice to take it through a car wash without having to do a 5-hour reboot LOL:

Did you just compare this...

To this...

I mean neither are practical cars but at least the Corvette does a couple of things well and looks nice!

My buddy just picked his up. He got the AWD Foundation Edition. His review so far:

1. Drives like a small car due to the fly-by-wire steering system.
2. Zero to 60 in 4.1 seconds is crazy on 35" tires at nearly 7,000 pounds
3. Sound system is excellent, from music to Bluetooth
4. The most attention-getting car ever. Grandmas are taking pictures from the sidewalk. People are talking to him at stoplights haha.
5. Definitely a dust magnet. He's getting it wrapped.
6. He's like six & a half feet tall. Said the inside is SUPER comfortable & way better seats than the Model 3. Fits the whole family with 5 seats plus has the covered trunk for groceries & whatnot.

SO JEALOUS!
Did you, or are you canceling your order?

Finally saw one in person. Yikes.

I do have to admit, seeing a CT in person with or without a wrap changes my overall opinion about the vehicle. I thought it was completely hideous until I did see one with a deep blue wrap on the freeway that for me really changed how the vehicle looked.

I've seen a few good wraps around here that dramatically improve the appearance of it IMO. I still would not buy one.

Not a remote fucking chance. I have a truck to do work.
Last big trip I purchased 22,000 licensed tonnage and crossed 3 states and 6 mountain passes at 21,000 GVW.
The trip before that was 6 days from Seattle to Queens @15,000. That's 3100 miles and how many charging stops?
My new place is ~100 miles away. It would not make it towing anything substantial. Then there's the problem of no power at the new house site, not for several months of work. it is an idiotic waste of metal.
The Rivian provides a truck bed and does a few things, same with the Lighning. This thing is a fucking monstrosity, an ode to a narcisstic moron I would never give a plug nickel to.
