The Tesla's aren't jumping at the light.

You're confusing the Tesla's quick reaction time to jumping. Common mistake but an often made one.

I'm using it as a figure of speech here, there are no light in this video and tesla clearly starts before the Lamborghini. Also that car is almost a second faster to 60, so the video is at a odds with reality.

At 1:23 did sirens start flashing in that SUV or was that just reflections? It was also cool how the spoiler comes up at the end.

No. An electric motor's torque is directly tied to it's rotational speed. At zero speed the motor has maximum torque, and max speed it has zero torque.
Depends on the type of motor. I think this is accurate for DC motors, but for 3-phase induction motors such as what Tesla uses, the low end usually has about 50% of peak torque (at 90-95% full speed).

There are a lot of factors in play and this is just what I remember from my university elec days.

those motors overheat so quickly it is ridiculous. Someone took one up to the drag strip and got 2 timed runs off of it before it started limiting power. Also, Nissan Leaf's routintely beat them around Laguna Seca at the annual EV race there because of the power limiting. I used to SCCA a guy with a Model S and he got 2 out of 4 laps out of it because of how bad the car limited power half way through the second lap.

If you like racing stop light to stop light, yeah its a faster car. But if you actually want to race it you will be disappointed.

edit: I seriously cant stand automotive journalism and the Tesla circle jerk sometimes. Here is an article about the car power limiting half way through the 2nd lap at Button Willow. The author goes on to say basically "well at least you get one full power lap in". If any other car manufacturer did this the press would be up in flames!

Dude, who the fuck cares? This is not a track car, it is a sedan you drive every day. People don't buy an M5 to do track days, they buy an M3 for that. Circle jerk your way out of that bitch.

these things power limit after 2-3 hard pulls like that and frequently under normal driving conditions in places like Arizona or LA on hot days. That should be unacceptable for any car.

I am still a fan of the car, I just get sick of how over hyped they have become.

disclaimer: I used to work for them.

Impressive Dyno. It's amazing how quiet it is. Having had a 700hp+ Ford Lightning, I can't stand being around the dyno in action. It's extremely loud and just sets off alarms in my head. There's so much that can go wrong. One of those tie down straps could cut you in half.

This is all true.

At least Tesla is putting a lot of work in. The more of these things that are made, and the more effort going into improving things the better.

As they exist now they are NOT for the performance minded. You just don't have much repeatable performance on tap before things start to get limited. Not a track day kind of vehicle. To work and back with chargers at both locations would be ideal, but I wouldn't ever spend the money on one at this time with the current limitations.

Whenever the next big battery tech breakthrough comes by, along with intelligent cooling improvements, we should see a magnificent increase in capabilities and convenience.

In my current vehicle, I have many hundreds of thousands of refueling spots available, can go from empty to 500 mile range in 5 minutes, and have maximum power available at any point in the range, and even keep an extra 75 or so miles of emergency fuel stored onboard if I'm going to be going somewhere off the beaten path. ICE has had 100+ years of improvements under the belt though. Electric has basically been around for the same time frame, but not constantly improving as a standard for personal transport due to lack of investment.

Once electric meets these checkboxes, they will have mass market at hand :

(1)- No more expensive than a regular top-selling vehicle in standard trim (think Camry/Accord/etc i4)

(2)- 5 minutes max to fill up (full charge)

(3)- Full trunk and interior space (this is close to reality afaik)

(4)- ~500 mile range on full charge

(5)- No discernible loss of power all the way to empty or virtually empty charge

Doable? We shall see.

That's Allen Wong's Aventador, I've been in it, and he refuses to use launch control because it will often damage the clutch (@$24k).

Just looked him up and found his reddit AMA. Seems like a very humble guy!
