these things power limit after 2-3 hard pulls like that and frequently under normal driving conditions in places like Arizona or LA on hot days. That should be unacceptable for any car.
I am still a fan of the car, I just get sick of how over hyped they have become.
disclaimer: I used to work for them.
This is all true.
At least Tesla is putting a lot of work in. The more of these things that are made, and the more effort going into improving things the better.
As they exist now they are NOT for the performance minded. You just don't have much repeatable performance on tap before things start to get limited. Not a track day kind of vehicle. To work and back with chargers at both locations would be ideal, but I wouldn't ever spend the money on one at this time with the current limitations.
Whenever the next big battery tech breakthrough comes by, along with intelligent cooling improvements, we should see a magnificent increase in capabilities and convenience.
In my current vehicle, I have many hundreds of thousands of refueling spots available, can go from empty to 500 mile range in 5 minutes, and have maximum power available at any point in the range, and even keep an extra 75 or so miles of emergency fuel stored onboard if I'm going to be going somewhere off the beaten path. ICE has had 100+ years of improvements under the belt though. Electric has basically been around for the same time frame, but not constantly improving as a standard for personal transport due to lack of investment.
Once electric meets these checkboxes, they will have mass market at hand :
(1)- No more expensive than a regular top-selling vehicle in standard trim (think Camry/Accord/etc i4)
(2)- 5 minutes max to fill up (full charge)
(3)- Full trunk and interior space (this is close to reality afaik)
(4)- ~500 mile range on full charge
(5)- No discernible loss of power all the way to empty or virtually empty charge
Doable? We shall see.
