am i the only person who kinda really hates that everything is controlled by that giant tablet? i like knobs and not having a giant light source inside the car at night

I hate finding where to touch on a touch-screen especially while driving. I experience it with my mounted smartphone everyday. Give me an idrive type of knob with quick-buttons around it any day. A quick glance and mental movement is better than pinpointing the point of contact especially when it involves multiple screens/clicks.

Apparently Tesla now uses Google Voice commands: (well, as of 2015)

So if they do have really good voice recognition, maybe that would work too.

Welp, maybe it's just me, but that's a bit cringe worth - based on my experience speaking to my devices and chrome.
I expect having a very limited command set improves things a bunch (it would need to for safety reasons).

The 'S' is very impressive, but seems to be too much of a 'driverless' car sort for me. I want a dash or hud and some buttons.
It's bad enough that current fly-by-wire systems give me mild fits. First world problems FTW or Luddites FTW . Not in the market for a new car anyway but, its fun watching advancements in battery/electric powered vehicles.

What? DVR as in cable TV/FIOS DVR??

I understand it to mean DVR for a dashcam type setup.

Yup, I was referring to dashcam: (edited that post to clarify)

Although separately, to sontakke's question, I did see that the new Expedition is offering Sling service:

https://media.ford.com/content/ford...2/28/ford-advances-vehicle-entertainment.html

Ford is reinventing how drivers and passengers consume entertainment in their vehicles; available dual-headrest rear seat entertainment system in all-new 2018 Ford Expedition can stream live cable or satellite television via SlingPlayer™; all-new compact 2018 EcoSport makes it easy to stream music and gives occupants more places to store mobile devices

Well Ajay, you would think Google/Apple would have used their Bangalore lab to QA their voice recognition software -)

My cars voice recognition system works great with my sons. When I give a command, my success rate is less than 1%

Well, voice commands don't work so well when it comes to voice commands - or did you mean something else

Can you get 0 to 60mph in 5.1 seconds with a "mere" 258-horsepower motor

Yup, electric. The Chevy Bolt has a 200hp electric motor & does 0 to 60 in 6.3s, and I can tell you from my test-drive that it feels pretty dang quick!

I don't think it's ugly, but it isn't particularly unique. I don't care for the interior at all - everything, EVERYTHING, is controlled by the touchscreen. And no dash gauges? I'd miss that for sure. There's a point where too much computerization is a bad thing...for example my Ford can control the HVAC with voice and touch controls. I've used it exactly never because dials just work better.

Yes I will be unable to easily keep track of engine temp, oil pressure, and RPMs in my Model 3.

LOL - but looking over for speed was an idea that really hasn't worked in the past (I guess maybe the Mini sold well but...)

The Mini sold because it was a Mini. The current design has a speedo/tach mounted on the column IIRC.

I'm not overly concerned as I'll surely have a chance to drive one before I have to order since the options I wan't won't be available until mid 18 anyway. I also presume the UI will go through some revision as more regular humans get their hand on them and provide feedback.

Using the touch screen to change the direction of airflow from the dash vents is absolutely retarded.
