Model Y unveil event on March 14 at LA Design Studio

Model Y, being an SUV, is about 10% bigger than Model 3, so will cost about 10% more & have slightly less range for same battery

Detailed specs & pricing will be provided, as well as test rides in Y

* Normal doors, not falcon wings
* Will look similar to the 3
* Truck unveil is later this year (separate event)

VERY excited! Got my calendar pinned for that date!

10% bigger than Model 3 and 10% more expensive than Model 3 per Elon's tweets.

I'm very curious to sit inside of a Y. The 3 was a bit on the snug side for me.

Supercharger V3 can charge at 1,000 MPH:

https://www.engadget.com/2019/03/06/tesla-v3-supercharger-ev/

* On the most efficient vehicles, like a Model 3 Long Range, Tesla expects they'll get 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes, and add range at a rate of 1,000 miles per hour.
* Peak rates go up to 250kW per car thanks to a new liquid-cooled cable design
* New stations don't have to split energy between multiple cars
* New feature called "On-Route Battery Warmup." When an owner navigates to a charging station, their car will make sure the battery is raised to an optimal temperature when they arrive which Tesla says can reduce average charge times by 25 percent.
* Over the next few weeks, Tesla is bumping charge rates at the 12,000+ V2 Superchargers to 145kW from 120kW.

Curious to see how Porsche's Taycan & Audi's E-Tron SUV are going to do with the 350kW chargers...

Supercharger V3 can charge at 1,000 MPH

I guess I have two questions about this...
  1. What's the proposed roll-out time to get these new features, which seem to have some new hardware requirements, to all of the existing or at least the most popular superchargers?
  2. Will the algorithm in the car be redesigned to take into account faster chargers? For example, it could prioritize them to save time, or present users with various options.

1.
I believe that all new SuperChargers will be V3, from now on. Check https://www.tesla.com/supercharger
Those will be added in new locations and as expansion units to current locations.

2.
Yes, the firmware has already been rolled out.

Check teslamotorsclub forums for much more detailed discussions on any Tesla topic.

I like the rear spoiler lip, the Model X should have that:

Side comparison next to the X. Lighting was surprisingly dark during the livestream on the Y:

Initial design thoughts:

1. It looks chonky. It's hard to see from the website because they maximize the angles, but watch the livestream to get an idea of it.

2. It looks like a Japanese anime car. It's way shorter than I expected.

3. That front nose is huge & flat. I like how they broke up the Model X's nose a lot better.

4. The back has a super-slope, like a BMW X6.

5. Very curious to see what the rear seats in the 7-seater are like. The rear seats in the X are already pretty tight, I can't imagine even a kid fitting in them in the Y. The visitors who went on the test drive didn't think a children's car seat would fit in it.

6. The aero wheels actually look pretty good with this design. Like, it actually looks pretty great in black with the aero rims:

Kind of looks like when you buy a knockoff toy model of the Model 3 from China & the dimensions are all wrong:

Beautiful car Model Y is. I'll be getting one in 2020.

I do think that they will start initial production late in 2019. Tesla has just been careful not to over-promise in terms of production date. It does have 75% of parts from Model 3, so no biggie to start late in 2019.

Interior volume larger than Mazda CX-5, Audi Q5.

Kaido, I want a ride in yours when it comes in!

I figure Christmas 2020 next year for the launch, then I'll give them another year to work the kinks out (learned my lesson about buying first-gen with the Renegade, lol), so Christmas 2021. Going to have to work a lot for the next couple of years to get my Ecoboost paid off before then, lol.

I'm glad that they finally considered removing the chrome for the black. I had my chrome pieces wrapped in black just to remove it, but it's not perfect. I wonder if a lot of the non-Chrome parts from the Y can be used on the 3? IT looks like the only one that shouldn't would be the long, top trim piece as that has to contain the curve for the taller roof. On the other hand, the door pieces are separate bits of trim. The mirror is one of the hardest parts to wrap, so it'd be interesting if that could be transferred over.

Although, it's kind of disappointing that the reveal event had a model with black wheels, but there's no option for that. Without the chrome trim, I feel like that would really finish that nice, two-tone look! There is over a year to wait for the car, so maybe the option will be available by that point. You can always change things after the fact up until close to when your car goes into production or they find a premade car that matches yours.
