I'm just hoping the Y brings down the resale value of the 3. I'm holding out for $20k used 3s.

lol... i think the battery pack alone costs 1/3rds that.... so yeah... i wouldn't keep my hopes up.

I'm not expecting them to be $20k next month. Eventually though SR+ used prices are going to become sane.

Any particular reason you would feel it'll be much different than a standard crew cab truck? Outside of the taller head room than some models, I doubt it will be.

1. 6 seats (front middle flips down into a console) with what looks like no hump in the middle (front or back) due to the flat battery pack design
2. Front trunk (frunk)
3. Side access panels
4. Bed
5. Storage box inside of bed

Also, I'm not understanding the Model Y space reactions. It has the same total cargo space as many other vehicles in it's class. Ya, it's a mid sized CUV so it's going to have low to mid 60cuft storage. Is it because it's the first cheap Tesla with decent space?

The 3 already pretty much has the space of a hatchback due to the flat battery pack design...it's not as tall as a hatchback in the rear, but there's TONS of space in it, not to mention the front trunk. So the Y will add even more space, which I think boils down to 3 things:

1. Perception
2. Practicality
3. Nostalgia

As Americans, we love the concept of "more" - bigger is always better! SUV instead of a car, Supersize instead of a large, etc. So the idea of getting more is great. It's also practical, because you do get a taller space to utilize, which means you can fit taller stuff & more stuff in your car as needed, which is also very convenient when you just want to throw stuff in (not to mention easier to get in & out of - the Model 3 sits pretty low to the ground). Plus there's a nostalgia factor...a lot of people grew up on hatchbacks or had them in college & they were super-functional & well-loved. So it pushes a lot of the right buttons.

Tesla stock already broke $500 a share...I'm sure it will surpass $600 by the end of the year with the release of the Y, and I'd imagine it will become their best-selling car in pretty short order!

If you want to seat 7, minivan is the way to go. Even on my Lexus LX470, the back 2 seats are really only suitable for small kids. And even for them, it's uncomfortable. You want the Y for the extra cargo room, not for the 7 seating.
There are midsize suvs/cuvs that have better legroom than your full sized.

The Telluride/Palisades/GV80 all can seat full sized adults fairly comfortably in their third row. Granted the cargo space with all three rows up is not great. But yeah the Y as a seven seater is pointless.

My next car will be a Tesla Model Y or a Genesis GV80. They will be comparable in price. That is as long as they aren’t marking them up $10k above MSRP like Kia dealerships are doing with the Telluride.

I’m leaning more towards the GV80 because it’s true luxury and the Y isn’t.

Aside from small children I don't know how you could actually use 7 seats in the Model Y. I'm with you I'd rather go for a bigger SUV/crossover instead if I need a 7-seat vehicle. However as a 5-seater the Model Y looks solid.

I think those old photos from Reddit while back. I wouldn't fully trust those photos thinking that's how it looks now. 7 seat Model Y is not supposed to start delivering until 2021. So lot can change until then even though I have sneaking suspicion that we might start seeing regular seat 5 Model Y deliveries start late this quarter Q1 or beginning of Q2.

Photos of the Model Y third-row seat...it doesn't even look like a toddler could fit their legs in there! I would say it's only good for car seats for babies, but with today's safety standards, they are pretty big & wide, so I don't even know if you could fit those in either:

Maybe, as Ponyo said, the photos are old and not really indicative of actual leg room, but there could be another factor that isn't shown: some cars with 3rd rows that I've been in have a sliding 2nd row, which can provide a little more legroom in the 3rd row at the expense of 2nd-row leg room. Either way, it seems kind of a waste to sacrifice cargo space for a 3rd row of mostly useless seats. If you need to routinely travel around with more than 4-5 people in your car, it may be time to look at either getting another vehicle or to stop being a taxicab.

That's why I'd really like to see one in person & check it out. I randomly need to cart people around & it'd be nice to just take one car in a pinch!

Or if they could move up the Cybertruck schedule, that'd be OK too lol.

As far as I can tell, it'll be the smallest SUV/CUV on the market with 3rd row seating. The Journey has a few cuft more space behind the front seats assuming the Y doesn't change it's specs. The RAV4 that use to have a 3rd row doesn't exist anymore.

The back seat of my 2013 Chevrolet Volt is like that until the front seat is moved forward a bit.

Here's front parked picture of Model 3 and Model Y. You can see the slight height difference between the two. Tesla is going to sell boatload of Y.

I know marketers have to call this a _UV because people are dumb, but that's a wagon.

Whatever you want to call the Y, whether CUV or hatchback, Tesla is going to sell lot of Y. Way more than 3 in about a year or two. I'm going to go ahead and predict on January 29, 2020, during Tesla's Q4 conference call, Elon Musk will announce Tesla have begun early production of the Model Y at the Fremont factory and will begin small delivery of Model Y in this current Q1 quarter. Tesla unveiled the Model Y on March 15, 2019. So less than a year after the unveiling, Tesla will have gone from unveiling to actual customer delivery. That's pretty darn fast for Silicon Valley tech company who supposedly don't know how to mass manufacture cars according to all so called industry and car experts. Where is @ultimatebob, the constant Tesla and Musk naysayer? Are you ready to repent for your sins?

I get if you don't want to call it a CUV but it's a hatchback, not a wagon/estate/touring.
whichever.

edit: a friend was shopping for cute utes and insisted on calling them wagons to the sales guys, who all tried to correct her that they were crossovers

I'll believe that the Model Y shipped on time once I see one on the road in person, @ponyo

I have my pre-order in for the Cybertruck, but I'm fully banking on Christmas 2023 for delivery lol.
I think Tesla is getting better at mass manufacturing so I'm going to trust their timeline. Tesla will have to design and develop new mass manufacturing process for the Cybertruck since the body pieces won't be stamped but I trust Musk and Tesla will figure it out. So while we might get slight delay, I wouldn't count on huge hiccup and long delay. The bigger problem and the real reason why you might not get your Cybertruck until Christmas 2023 or later is because the demand is too high. I wouldn't be surprised if Musk announces on Tesla's earning call at the end of this month that they have more than 500,000 pre-orders for the Cybertruck. It doesn't really matter to me when I get my Cybertruck. I don't really need a car or truck as I have 4 vehicles already. I just want it because I want to support Tesla and their mission, and I also think the Cybertruck is the most badass vehicle ever made. My wife and I have talked out about getting 5th wheel camper. I think I rather have the Cybertruck and use it for camping.

You really think that 500,000 people are going to put down a deposit and pre-order that weird looking thing before taking it for a test drive? Seems pretty reckless to me.

Elon said on November 26th, Tesla had 250,000 pre-orders for the Cybertruck. That was like 5 days after the truck reveal. Last month, @Muadib pre-ordered the Cybertruck and posted his order number on December 26th. Based on his and my order number, I confirmed Tesla had around 415,000 Cybertruck pre-orders. So that's another 165,000 pre-orders in a month. Tesla Q4 earnings call is on Jan 29th. So I don't think it's a stretch to speculate Tesla got another 85,000 Cybertruck pre-orders in another month from December 26th to January 29th. I would say it's very good bet the Cybertruck pre-orders will be over 500,000 by earnings call.

As for the aesthetics, I'm willing to bet lot of people are going to grow to love the weird Cybertruck design and it won't look so weird by the time it's released. Who knows, after people get used to Cybertruck design, all other trucks might look boring and dumb.

I don't think a pre-order system that requires a mere $100 deposit to simply put your name in line to maybe confirm an order later is an accurate way to really gauge genuine pre-orders and interest. If anything, it seems like a way to fluff numbers to get additional people to pour investment money into Tesla or to pump up a stock price.

Oh, yeah... I think that Tesla is doing $100 refundable deposits for this one, so it's pretty low risk.
