It's actually funny.

No tessellation and looks as good or better than Crysis 2, the tessellated to all hell turd.

Just because a game has all the DX 11 bells and whistles doesn't mean that a DX 9 game can look just as good. Look at Witcher 2, that game looks just as good as most DX 11 games.

I agree DX9 can look good. But I want tessellation. This is why I buy DX11 hardware and this over-hyped built exclusively for DX11 (no DX9) title.

Some say yes, some say little or no, some say no. Dice confirms it. But testing reveals no performance drop on a Cypress GPU which is highly unlikely if its doing anything at all. Who is right? How can something as obvious and beneficial as tessellation be so elusive?

Renderer in crysis 2 is superb - it looks at least as good as BF3. BF3's biggest win is it's lighting which is great, but it does look a bit flat and blocky in comparison to crysis 2 which makes better use of displacement mapping and tesselation.

Funny, I buy it because it is the most powerful hardware out there.

Since you took those screenshots, go and retake them again at terrain medium (max for dx10 hardware) and high/ultra (only enabled on dx11).

I honestly have never bothered to look for it (differences) since the terrain looks great to me, even at the distance.

Tssellation is for distance shots, when you're in a plane, yes, tesselation is used extensively for mountains/hills. It's a very simple feature though, and was only made a big deal when nVidia had the lead on 5870s. Once the 6xxx series came about nobody cared.

Ok I will try your suggestion tonight. Which maps do I test for it. Does the single player levels use tessellation? I don't mind testing but don't really want to see my spm stat dropping from doing nothing in a mp match.

I don't have the skills to hover perfectly still and take comparison shots. So just took these and see of you guys can spot the marvelous terrain tessellation.

It does look like tessellation, if used, may be used very sparingly -- pretty tough to gauge in screenshots, at least the one's I've seen. Maybe with a future patch, there may be noticeable differences. Even, nVidia's tweak guide for BF3, there is nothing distinct, or to showcase an example with tessellation.

I have to lol now.
You lock the tesselation at what..8x?
And think that if you lock tesselation (AMD "optimized") that altering I.Q. setting will override the driver lock?

I already stated/asked this once in this here thread, but apparently I got ignored...

Can ATI driver edits force any difference to the visuals? This is a Deferred Render game, which means everything is already packaged together before the driver interfaces with the cards and push the code to them.

I know you cannot set AA in drivers and see any visual difference in the game.. can you force other things through though? I'm having a hard time believing you can turn Tessellation on and off or control it at all through the driver, and actually see a difference in this particular game (or any game using Frostbite 2).

Derferred render doesn't force tessellation. Crysis 2 is deferred render engine and you can set the tessellation factor in CCC just fine.

Where does it say that tessellation was locked at 8X? And show me a source that says AMD optimized means overriding the tessellation in this AMD Evolved game. Then even if AMD optimized is forcing a certain tessellation factor, you know what? My fps didn't budge a bit. The lowest 2X factor dropped my fps like a stone in Heaven 2.5, Crysis 2 and 3Dmark11. Even with Fermi you are not getting away with any appreciable amount of tessellation without a slight performance drop and not to mention Cypress which is far worse in tessellation performance.

Ok, you tell me what that setting does then?
Feel free to use google.

Like I said AMD optimized doesn't override the tessellation factor in EVERY game. Only games where AMD decides a higher than optimal tessellation factor is used by the application. AMD optimized have no effect on 3Dmark11 score or Heaven 2.5 score. And it certainly doesn't turn off all tessellation and give you no performance drop.

http://www.nordichardware.com/news/71-graphics/42396-amd-rolls-out-catalyst-112-with-tessellation-control.html

AMD optimized is the default selection in CCC. Why would they help code in DX11 in BF3 then force tessellation off with AMD optimized? It makes no sense.

I stand corrected. Thank you, I figured someone knew the truth if I was off.

You are welcome.

I am beginning to suspect what others see as tessellation is simply a bunch of high polygon meshes designed to look like tessellation. Just like how witcher 2 faked it. It's hilarious how many people actually believe there was tessellation in that DX9 title.

Maybe its on regardless if you run dx11 hardware. :/

Its clearly touted in DICE presentations, terrain tessellation is highly optimized for efficiency. Now, if they mean its soooo optimized that its non-existant.. well, whats the point of devs (not marketing guys) lying about frostbite 2 and bf3?
