Here are my results:
2006 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0T GLI:
Pros: This car was awesome. Handling was top notch, had great pickup, and the mileage was still really good. The ride was great and it was a damn fun car to drive.
Cons: Price was a bit on the high end, and the seats are weird (they use a wheel to adjust tilt like on an old school Ford Taurus). Seats were a deal breaker for my wife.

2006 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0T:
Pros: Basically the same ride as the GLI, but with better options for seating.
Cons: Price was still high. Volkswagen quality has also been pretty questionable the past few years so I'm hestiant to buy one. I'm sure it will be fine for the first 2-3 years but I'm not willing to shell out lots of time/money later down the line when it inevitably has all the mechanical problems of a typical German car.

2006 Nissan Altima 2.5S and 3.5SE:
Pros: Good pickup/ride quality, and good prices.
Cons: Felt cheap and uninspiring. Just wasn't in the same category of quality as the other cars I test drove.

2006 Honda Accord V6
Pros: Great quality and good ride/suspension.
Cons: Price was high and it had an uninspiring interior. I used to have a 1994 accord and this car felt exactly the same. Nothing has changed about this car in 10 years. Its still the same old accord. Been there done that.

2007 Camry SE V6
Pros: Great ride and suspension (surprisingly!) and the interior was really nice. I was pretty sold on this car and started negotiating. Thats when the Cons came in.
Cons: Current inventory on this vehicle is extremely low. Most dealers will be lucky to have 1 or 2 on the lot. MSRP is currently about $5,000 over invoice. And the dealers do not budge much on price because of the inventory.

Cliffs: I need to get a new 4 door car. I test drove the Jetta, Altima, Accord, and Camry. Liked the Camry and Jetta best. Jetta quality is bothering me and Camry price is over budget. No decision made yet.

Would you be interested in a hatch. The VW Rabbit 4 door is nice. How about the Sonata or the Ford Fusion?

Test a Mercury Milan or Ford Fusion; they're basically the same cars, except for a few cosmetic issues.

I think the Sonata is definitely worth a look. The reviews on them compared to the accord and camry were very favorable if I recall correctly. They've made some great strides in the last few years. I'm sure it'll be significantly more inepensive as well.

I need gas mileage so the gas guzzler cars like the Charger, Magnum, and Impala won't cut it for me. I rented a Fusion once and found the interior to be cheap and generic.

I'm not a big fan of the Korean cars or Ford so those are probably out too.

Yep, and the Sonata can be loaded for ~$22k. It's definitely worth a look.

I'd also say look at a Subaru Legacy and Buick Lucerne. Pricier options in these, but more luxury than the Accord/Camry line.

the impala isnt a gas guzzler...

here is your Jetta: Specs Fuel Tank Capacity: 14.5 gal.; EPA Mileage Estimates: 22 mpg / 30 mpg; Range in Miles: 319 mi. / 435 mi. More
here is the Impala: Fuel Tank Capacity: 17 gal.; EPA Mileage Estimates: 21 mpg / 31 mpg; Range in Miles: 357 mi. / 527 mi.

as you can see, your guzzler arguement is out the window.

and i said 500, not fusion, 500 is a great car.

I've tossed around the idea of getting a Mazda 6...but the reliability seems below that of Nissan and more on par with Volkswagen. For the price, I'd rather get a Volkswagen.

In 08 there will be a new Accord that is going to match the safety of the Civic, probably have a nice redesign too. Doesn't help now, but hey, now you know

Def look at the Mazda 6 and Subaru Legacy. The Legacy 2.5 Limited comes with leather, heated seats, sun roof, the whole nine yards. 165HP 2.5L H-4 AWD, gets 23/28 I believe. Not the best on mileage, esp if it is primarily stop & go city driving, but a great car that will last forever.

Have you considered a Mazda or a Subaru? The Subaru Forrester with the 2.5l turbo engine is a pretty sweet car. So is the Legacy with that engine.

Not interested in American cars in general to be perfectly honest.

I considered the Legacy but the price was a little out of my range. Also the AWD would go to waste for me since I don't have to deal with snow in Texas.

I felt most comfortable with the Camry...but my sales experience was just bad. Its surprising that for the #1 car in America they'd have such issues with something simple like obtaining an SE V6.

I rented one of these and hated it. It rides like a big boat with no road feel whatsoever which I've found is typical of GM cars. I wouldn't even bother looking at it.

I rented a Ford 500 also and while it is okay, better than the Lucerne anyway, I wouldn't buy one. The interior is definitely el-cheapo, the engine is underpowered and that CVT transmission is horrible.

I had the same experience with the Fusion. Still had that el-cheapo Ford feeling.
