Hi all,
I was thinking of creating a test image consisting of various colors and patterns that I could use to visually test a phones display in-store. I realized as I was looking at phones over the weekend that it's hard to compare phones side by side because each one has different backgrounds, icons and apps making it a little hard to visually compare. It would be great if I could just pop open the browser, load up a png and put them side by side.

So, what sorts of patterns or colors do you think would be useful? Because I'm interested in getting an HTC One S, one of the patterns I'm trying to think of is something that would make a pentile display stand out.

And yes, I know looking at an image in-store is obviously a subjective measurement of quality.

I think there is already one out there, with gradients/colors, etc... Somewhere. I saw it when they were comparing SGS3/OneX/iPhone and Galaxy Nexus screens.. can't find it now though.

I took it upon myself to make a site! It's very basic (as I don't know html very well) and there are only two image types at the moment. Suggestions for additional ones accepted. I hope people find this somewhat useful!

Is there a particular image that will highlight the problem folks have with Pentile displays?

That's what I would like to do with the subpixel test image. On my HTC One S, I can easily see individual pixels on the red and magenta pixel wide boxes. Blue, I can kinda see the individual pixels, and green not at all. I'll have to fiddle more with the test images. I think certain "edges" will stand out more depending on whether a display is pentile or not.

Interestingly, on the contrast gradient image, red seems to "float" above green and blue on my One S. I would be interested to know if anyone else sees this.

Also, I'm not sure the display resolution is being picked correctly for an iphone 4s, if someone could test that...
