Hehe, I'm not from the US, so I couldn't understand some things in there And I'm in college now (graduate, actually) and science was never my hobby (I hated physics, chemistry etc.). So I have some kind of an excuse.

once, i read something about how around 50% of people though that the reason light travels faster than sound is because of the way your ear is shaped.

100% here too. That was a joke of a test. And I do remember questions like these in the SAT-9s. (California state exams) I'd score in the 99th percentile for everything except language composition. (~60-70% ouch) And be glad a high aptitude in science is rare, otherwise engineers wouldn't be getting as high a pay.
