Testing playback for burned DVDs

I'm just starting to get into DVD burning and learned the importance of buying high-quality DVDs to ensure the best chances of quality playback while minimizing the chances of getting "coasters" in a spindle.

Regarding playback of a newly-burned DVD (for testing purposes), will there be immediate indication if the DVD is crap or not? Or will I have to watch the entire video (2+ hours of footage) to see if there are any skips/errors?

the easiest way to tell if it was a successful burn from beginning to end, is just skip ahead in the chapters to the end. that doesn't mean it won't hiccup during the video though. only way to be sure is watch it all the way through. i buy the cheapest media i can find and never get problems with video. it's gotta be the burner! i will never give up my pioneer a05.

You could always use a surface-scan type testing program to scan the DVD's contents at a higher speed than watching it. If you own a Lite-On DVD burner (or reader, I think), you can use KProbe to more detailed testing. (Similarly to how CDDoctor works with Lite-On and Sanyo CD-RW drives.)
