We already don't need *faster* SSDs. Techreport SSD reviews show the difference in real-world boot and game load times between the value champion MX100 and a "premium" 850 Pro is so tiny its as good as non-existent. What will take the market by storm is something that offers 90% of a MX100 speed but at half the price per GB, not more 850 Pros to appease synthetic benchmark gods.

We also don't "need" faster CPU's or memory. But we develop them anyway.

Also, storage is still a massive bottleneck with SSD's by several orders of magnitude when compared to the rest of the computer. Try running programs from a RAM disk and then say storage is fast enough.

Why does the mere fact of it being faster HAVE to make it more expensive?

It doesn't HAVE to make it more expensive, but you're making a huge (and false) assumption as to the reason they're more expensive. Here are a few of the more obvious reasons:

- SSDs have very intricate controllers that need to manage the drive's internal usage

- SSD yields are not equal to HDD yields

- SSDs are more expensive to manufacture

You're acting like you're being gouged over SSDs, and I find that notion a little preposterous. Prices have fallen rapidly and drastically.

Here is a great article explaining the innards of SSDs. There is a lot of info re: the controllers that manage the otherwise unimpressive "hey this is just flash" RAM.

Pretty sure it is the logo in the animated show Archer that dates back to well before the formation of the extremist circlejerkers. As a result of the name being ruined, the show has phased out the name.

It seems like they should continue to decrease toward HDD levels as production continues increase.

A follow up question related to the increased reliability. Anyone in here run their SSDs in a RAID0? Seems like if you're gonna go big regarding performance, go really big.

SSDs in RAID 0 is just as equally pointless as HDDs for the vast majority of people, especially since the higher capacity SSDs usually performs better than the lower ones in the same model.

Furthermore, a single decent SSD will utilise SATA 6Gbps pretty well. SSDs in RAID0 are simply going to hit SATA bottlenecks.

RAID 0 helps with HDDs because they are sequential access. SSDs are random access.

Wrong. RAID 0 doesn't address the problem of HDDs having poor random access latency and lousy IOPs at small transfer sizes one single bit. Sequential transfer rates which RAID 0 can theoretically boost by 2x were never the real world bottleneck for 99% of users.
