Given the current state of the economy and politics I can't see Congress funding even the most preliminary work on a Muon Collider for a number of years. Without another major project to replace the Tevatron it is entirely conceivable that Fermilab could be defunded and closed in the coming years.

Fermilab's funding has been declining and in further jeopardy since the mid-2000s IIRC, various earmarks have been the only thing keeping the Tevatron running. Any Federal commitment to a new major particle physics project like the ILC or the Muon Collider will run into the numerous billions of dollars.

From what I understand its simply obsolete. The biggest dissapointment was the failure of the SSC. 2 Billion down the drain for nothing. Would've been 3 times more powerful then the LHC. And this was over 15 years ago.

I'm sure they will get jobs, can't get much better qualifications in that field than having worked at Fermilab. But I'm sure CERN has lots of scientists of their own, not sure they could take on that many extra?

There is always a place for the best and brightest. The top guys/gals should not have a problem finding employment with something like CERN. They are still expanding, new experiments and equipment coming online every year so I would say that it should not be a big problem.

The Tevatron is the model "T" of accelerators. Why would you pay to put one of those in a professional race? From a scientific standpoint it's useless and if you think Republicans are going to support a new research project of the magnitude necessary (read expense) then you would be wrong. High energy physics is now a European monopoly.
