A state court issued an arrest warrant on Wednesday for Rep. Tom DeLay, requiring him to appear in Texas for booking on state conspiracy and money laundering charges.

The court set an initial $10,000 bail as a routine step before the Texas Republican's first court appearance Friday.

DeLay, R-Texas, could be fingerprinted and photographed, although his lawyers had hoped to avoid this step. DeLay probably will surrender in his home county of Fort Bend, near Houston, but he could go to any law enforcement office in Texas. His court appearance will be in Austin.

It seems this is becoming serious, I know Delay has been charged with certain crimes before but has he ever had a warrent out for his arrest for those crimes?

You Republicans should all be so proud. Your House leader being booked like a common criminal.

But wait! DeLay is a common criminal.

What took them so long?

It's too soon to crack open the champagne since this just follows from the indictment. It offers no new evidence of wrongdoing or proof of guilt.

This is why it's hard to take the extremists in either camp seriously, since they refuse to let logic or common sense keep them from making a talking point cheap shot.

(My personal opinion is that he's corrupt and guilty even if there may not be enough evidence to convict, but I believe most in the House and Senate in both parties would have reason to fear a really in depth investigation of their fundraising and gifts.)

Really? I wonder if DonVito cares to comment.

....It is standard procedure. All this means is that he has to appear in court at a specified date. If not, then the popo will go after him. All that will happen is he's gonna get a mugshot, fingerprinted, then his attorney will get him out on bail. Big whoop.

Much as I hate to say it - I'd rather take legal advice from Dennis Rader than Pabster - he's right in this instance. This is standard operating procedure. Apparently DeGuerin has already made arrangements for DeLay to turn himself in, giving him the opportunity to immediately bail himself out.

"Standard Procedure"? Sure, when you've been arrested! What's not "standard procedure" is getting arested in the first place.

I say 70 million will turn over the fact that he was with his mistress when he got the news of his indictment and he'll swing on the fact that she saved his poopy underwear. I submit to the jury, your Honor, that only an intense realization of the consequences of his guilt could overwhelm Delay's pucker factor.

Eh. I doubt very much he's guilty. The DA may have pressed the indictment in order to oust him from the ML position. The deed is done. I don't see him being convicted.

There you go with your unstated assumptions again. There will be no smoking undies.

It's stone cold obvious that DeLay was wearing a woman's negligee when the sh!t hit the, er, his fanboy toy.

This week on NOW:
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) has been called one of the most powerful and controversial leaders Congress has ever seen. Over the years, many believe DeLay has become the nexus of corporate money and politics in Washington. Today, one of his political action committees, Texans for a Republican Majority (TRMPAC), is at the center of a criminal investigation. What will this investigation reveal about the man they call "The Hammer" of the House of Representatives? NOW goes inside the current investigation into DeLay's alleged fundraising improprieties. With interviews from prosecutors and Washington insiders, NOW profiles DeLay, examines the case against TRMPAC, and analyzes what his brand of political fundraising means for democracy.

What are the powers of a president in times of war? This week, Attorney General John Ashcroft refused to release the government memo that contends that a wartime president is not bound by existing laws prohibiting torture and wouldn't comment on any advice he might have given the President regarding the memo. Some argue that the memorandum laid the ground work for the abuses that surfaced in the Abu Ghraib prison scandal. David Brancaccio talks to Ron Daniels, executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, which, this week along with the Philadelphia law firm Montgomery, McCracken, Walker and Rhoads, filed lawsuits against two US corporations contracted in Iraq. The Center claims these contractors, in the name of corporate profits, conspired to humiliate, torture and abuse persons detained by U.S. authorities in Iraq.

There's a movement afoot among the press in Washington to push for less secrecy in government. Last Month, Tom Curley, president and CEO of the Associated Press unveiled a plan for a "media advocacy center" to lobby for open government. "The government is pushing hard for secrecy," said Curley, "We must push back equally hard for openness." Curley has led the Associated Press since June 1, 2003, and he is the 12th person to head the worldwide news organization since its founding in 1848. Previously, Curley was president and publisher of USA TODAY, the nation's largest-selling daily newspaper. A Bill Moyers interview.

That does sound more likely.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Our "beloved" GOP leadership is imploding: Delay doing the perp walk. Frist under investigation for insider trading. Cheney's office, and high-level executive leadership likely to be indicted in the Plame case. Bush with record low approval records.

And they did it to themselves, no vast liberal conspiracy required.

Time to lay down odds and start betting as to whether he'll be convicted, and if convicted, who will pardon him? Will he be pardoned by the governor, or by Bush himself?
