I'm sorry but I'm missing something here.

That's $5000 per MWhr. That's about £4000 per MWhr!

I'm tired and a bit stoned but UK electricity costs about £90 per MWhr. And thats in this inflated cost era. I must be mistaken about those prices, here's no way that US electric is that much more!

You are missing a key piece of the puzzle. Texas is not connected to the two US National Electric Grid cuz they don't want no stinking Federal regulations.

It's also the spot price for non obligated power, not every MHhr used.

So for most Texans that reads "Turn up your heat to 80 in case you lose power"
Pretty much. That's what I did in the 2021 rolling blackouts knowing I'd be having power for an hour and a half, then none for the next hour and a half, then power for an hour and a half, and so on. Heat would be cranked to the max with a space heater going too.

No matter how many folks existing in the DPDT (Democratic People's Dictatorship of Texas) get freezer burned and drop dead, there's a lot more of them that swear it's Biden and the Democrats in DC that's killing them. Besides, it'll only be those poor brown folks that can't pay their heating bills that'll gladly sacrifice themselves for Trump, Greg Abbott and his corrupted cronies anyway. All hail the Great Benevolent Lleadderr Abbott.

It's the natural gas plants that are having issues. The switch to natural gas had nothing to do with being green and everything to do with making the green.
Seriously, NG plants are the simplest power stations to build. Take a special kind of genius to screw that up.

I read the title to Willy Nelson
"On the edge again, Texas grid is on the edge again, Freezing people for the profits is not a sin, they can't wait to get on the edge again."

<Verse 3 go high baby>
" On the edge again, with those rate hikes coming hourly
We're investor's friends
Keep us separate we'll do it our way,
And our way,
Is on the edge again........."

Listening to conservatives, I thought only the CA grid had issues.

Hope everyone stays safe.
Well the local utility here Puget Sound Energy. Has been requesting people to reduce their power consumption (finally broke above freezing at one point yesterday) due to unusual power usage. Yea, it's cold as shit Sherlock. Piss poor planning is what I surmise.
Yesterday, had, oh, probably 7 drop outs. Fortunately, only for 4 to 10 seconds.

How cold is it getting there? We lost power for a few seconds here after the huge snow/sleet storm Friday and the temps dropping to -5 over the weekend. Happened sometime at night, only noticed because the oven clock was blinking.

It’s dropped to 30.8F (-0.7C) in my back yard. Unfortunately the temperature dropped earlier by about 6 hours so we spent all morning in the cold rain finishing up our prep.

We’ve got tarps, zip up greenhouses, Christmas lights and an outdoor space heater trying to keep our garden and a couple of plants alive.

So far it’s doing ok. (Set up a cheap camera and fridge thermometer)

Looks like ERCOT significantly overestimated the demand forecast. Which is both good and not good.
Southwest Power Pool did too, I've never noticed them miss by that much before. Better than under estimating, though.

They need line heaters in the extreme cold and they don't always have them in Texas.
