Do you believe that bribery should be legal? Why shouldn't an elected official's choice be allowed to be swayed by money if it's his choice?

Perry used his power of choice to try to interfere with an elected official. He didn't want a Democrat in office so he threatened to veto her budget unless she resigned. Using his power in order to try to override the law (she was under no legal obligation to resign) and the will of the People (she was elected to office) is an abuse of power.
He didn't veto it because it was good policy, he used the threat of veto to try to coerce her, and when she didn't resign, carried out the threat in retaliation. That's abuse of power.

Okay, I'm on board now.

It seems odd that a DA who works for the state public integrity unit wouldn't be made to resign, if not resigning herself, for trying to get the sheriff to give her a pass when she's so blitzed she's 3x over the legal limit and obviously so far gone out of her mind that she'd actually act like that, and then, after that is not made to happen (the resignation) at the proper levels, when someone goes with the nuclear option to force it to happen, that person gets in trouble.

I'm not sure which is worse: Perry for being so dumb as to actually state why he's doing it or whoever is in charge of that DA office, not to mention, that DA herself (although it sounds like expecting her to behave ethically is outside the realm of realistic expectations), not properly doing their job(s).

With people like this in government, who needs enemies?

Very well said. Thank you.

It's also called "stepping on your big swinging dick". It's gotta hurt, particularly when wearing golf shoes.

Haha, I'm sure rich Perry is really worried about that as he drinks $500 bottle scotch and will be rich for life. Hate on...

She was just trying to get booked & get the hell out of there.

I'm not sure which is worse, either- sanctifying Perry's political bullshit or claiming she wasn't properly doing her job. Perry vetoed the unit's whole budget to get back at her.

Tommy Delay is doin' well, too, I'm sure. OTOH, he's out of politics for good. Buh-bye, hammer boy.

Kiss your presidential ambitions goodbye, Rick.

And, hey, he's all about mandatory minimums, right?

He's facing 99 years.

Shill on.

I'm hoping for the proper outcome - they both get removed from office, are found guilty of the charges, and receive the maximum penalty available under the law. Both seem like scum and are actually quite deserving of each other, maybe best so as cellmates.

Perry is looking really good with those glasses. As long as he keeps his mouth shut, he's presidential material. Alas, when he talks, you know he's another governor from Texas.

Luvin' the false equivalency.

She did her time-

Harshest sentence ever for a first time DWI in Travis County history. She owned right up to it.

Vs 5-99 years for poor ol' Rick. Not that he'll ever do a day in jail, much like Delay.

It's not about Lehmberg. Her DWI conviction is immaterial. It's about Perry's illegal bullying.

The repubs have learned from the Delay case. They will take this seriously and react strongly. They will not allow it to linger.

It's only a democratic county grand jury, after all. People will see this for what it is these days, and not be fooled.

And Perry is the Governor, not a Congressman.

This is a clearly a fucking retaliation move because Perry decided to take action against the border situation when Obama wouldn't. It reeks and this is not going to stick. If they can indict him on this, Obama and his cronies have much more that they can be indicted on. Again, this is a democrat witch hunt and in the end it's gonna back fire. Sleazy politics ahead of the mid-terms is exactly what this is.

I must be missing something, how is it "false equivalency" if I say both should receive max sentences? I'm not suggesting they'll be equal severity since they're different crimes. I'm glad she 'fessed up and did her time, I hope you're not suggesting she should not have?

i hate that asshole about as much as anybody, and i still think this is bullshit.

shamelessly ripped from elsewhere:

You should read it before you quote it.

"This line of argument is silly. Under it, any line item veto of anything the lege passes would be abuse of official capacity."
This is missing the relevant part: with intent to obtain a benefit or with intent to harm or defraud another

The shilling is strong to overlook it.

Anyone who supports this president's lawless defacto amnesty of illegals is an idiot. I suspect you are one of them, so kiss my ass. I know what this shit is and my sifter works pretty well. Rick Perry is being retaliated against for this and that is what it is. If he broke the law, then he will be tried and proven guilty. The justice system still works and in this country -he is innocent, until proven guilty. When did this board go so far left anyway? I was away for many years.
