McManus, who appeared uncomfortable as he addressed reporters, said Sanchez apparently ate the child's brain and some other body parts. She also decapitated the infant, tore off his face and chewed off three of his toes before stabbing herself.

"It's too heinous for me to describe it any further," McManus said. McManus described the crime scene as so grisly that police officers barely spoke to each other while looking through the house.

Parts of the child were missing, including pieces that Sanchez allegedly ate. "At this particular scene you could have heard a pin drop," McManus said. "No one was speaking. It was about as sombre as it could have been."

Officers called to Sanchez's house at about 5 a.m. Sunday found her sitting on the couch screaming "I killed my baby! I killed my baby!" McManus said. They found the boy's body in a bedroom. Police said Sanchez said the devil told her to kill her son and that she was hearing voices.

Absolutely disgusting. I'm trying to just understand the type of psychosis she experienced during this killing. We have all heard stories like this...voices in my head...devil told me to do it...They stated that she has been in and out of the psych ward previously...but wont disclose the reasons.

What the hell does the "stigma of mental illness" have to do with this woman's actions? She clearly was off her nut when she performed her acts, and a lack of stigma wouldn't have made her any less nuts.

Or perhaps you mean that without the stigma, good treatment will be easier to obtain. Yes, I agree with that. But part of the de-stigmatization will be when people broadly realize that something that "just in your head" can be nigh close to impossible to prevail over.

You sir are wrong. Broad, incorrect generalization. You should read up on schitzophrenia (as an example) and its treatments, and how well they can work.

The de-stigmatization will help those who fear they may have an issue to seek help. Or, in extreme cases, loved ones are afraid to seek help for loved ones. Clearly this woman exhitibited signs of trouble before this happened (per the article). No one asked for help. If she had a bleeding gash in her leg, surely others would seek help. You know, because clearly something is wrong.

This has nothing to do with Texas and everything to do with extreme mental illness. Trying to apply the norms of rational behavior to the mentally ill is nothing but a fools game.

We can punish mental illness with the death penalty, but it does nothing to help us understand or prevent mental illness.

Like any manufacturing process, there is always that fraction defective. In general, the mentally ill are less violent than the norm, but in the exceptions, we can get some real dozies. As this thread points out. Lotsa luck in trying to make sense of it. If you understood it you would be doing it.

I'm still doing all I can to avoid this story. I'm aware only of the title and somebody said her husband wants her dead. Otherwise I've done a great job of not reading any details about it whatsoever. I may not return to this thread, just in case some clever soul quotes my post and succinctly summarizes the horror for me to read before I know what I'm doing.
