Text editing shortcuts?

In windows I can press CTRL A and it will select all in an active window. CTRL V will paste ... Does Yosemite have things like this to make life a little easier?

If I had a mouse with this laptop it would be easier but currently I don't have one...

If you look at the commands in the file menu the shortcuts are listed. For most common shortcuts, you can simply replace CTRL with the Apple Key.

Also, Apple-Right_Arrow moves all the way to the right, Apple-Left_Arrow all the way to the left. Apple-Shift-Left Arrow selects all the way to the left, etc.

Yeah. I came from Unix so I just call it the Apple key. I think when I first used a Mac they also called it the open apple key.

It's always been the command key. They stopped printing the Apple logo on it a few years ago.

I first used a Mac longer than a few years ago. I even remember an Apple key on my IIc. When I get new machines at work I usually leave the keyboards and mice in their box and just use whatever I already have out. Thinking about it they are not the chiclet style so they are probably really old. The last time I seen a new keyboard in the box with a Mac it was wireless, and there was trackpad instead of a mouse so I gave it to a coworker. I use a mechanical gamers keyboard at home. I always say Apple-<key> when describing a shortcut...never thought to see if the key was still there! lol

Basically, anything that you did with CTRL in Windows, try it with CMD in OS X, see if it works. If it doesn't, then start googling.

The Cmd key also acts like Alt for Cmd-Tabbing through open applications. Cmd-` (key above tab) for tabbing through open windows within an application.

Cmd-Z is usually Undo, but it depends on the app. Cmd-(Up) and Cmd-(Down) act as PgUp and PgDn in most apps too.

I really do find that Cmd is much more conveniently placed than Ctrl for common and/or repetitive key combos. On a related note, in the "Modifier Keys" section of the "Keyboard" System Preferences, you can change the function of all of the modifier keys if you happen to like your Ctrl key better than the Cmd key. You can also turn the Caps Lock key into a Ctrl key (or Cmd, or Opt) for the old school UNIX guys. Apparently this makes Emacs much more usable, but I'm a vim snob, so I wouldn't know.

I always used that to just turn off the caps lock altogether. On my personal machine I almost never need to use it.

Yea, but CMD+ is faster to type than Apple+. I mean, not a whole lot faster, but still.

Even though the command key replaced the apple key, it still would be useful. I've been using a mac for some time and have to take a second look occasionally.
