I got a text message on my cell phone about an inbound missile to Hawaii and then the shitstorm hit with family and relatives asking me if I got the same message and what should we do, where's the nearest shelter and all this with me grabbing my dig out bag and getting ready to head for the hills and telling the wifey to get the car started while I went for the batteries in the frige'.

And then I get the news on MSNBC via our Rep Tulsi Gabbard that it's a false alarm.

I thought the shit just got real.

*Whew*

I think an appropriate response to an event like this would be.....

......

Holy shit fuck dick piss crap dear God save me shit fuck bitch...and so on.

Forgive me for being blunt, but the proposition that N Korea would engage in first use of nuclear weapons against the US is completely absurd. I mean, just right out of the wild blue yonder. To entertain that notion for more than a few seconds is to have been chumped by the fear mongers.

It's happened before, of course. I remember the stupid duck & cover drills from the second grade, even an evacuation drill.

You mean...like those silly little Japanese people attacking the US? Why they would never dare! What's that? A surprise attack on Pearl Harbor? FAKE NEWS!

The vitriol being spewed by both sides in the current Dotard/Little Rocket Man pissing match is just the kind of thing that COULD trigger an unstable dictator to order such an attack...and from all reports, NK's Moron in Chief is just that kind of unstable leader.

Please, don't play innocent here. North Korea has been working on a nuclear weapons program for a while, but there's no question that Trump has been antagonizing the country in a way that Obama never did. It's one thing to be aware of a dangerous bull; it's another thing to wave your cape in front of it.

In fairness, NK ramped up their stuff on Trumps watch and for better or worse he responded, not the other way around.

Fear monger more. Stir up some hysteria. Increase the military budget. Vote Republican, because they're here to protect you from all puffed up boogeymen.

Or, don't be a chump, OK?

I'm just now getting texts from family and friends expressing those exact same sentiments. Looks like the panic attack is finally over and now the accusations and recriminations are going to start rolling out along with the head hunting going up the chain of command and then back down again.
All of it sucks! I'm sorry a fear that's been forced to stay in the back of your minds as of late (let's say a year) were brought to the forefront. That must have been horrifying! You have more than disingenuous thoughts and prayers, you have my concern and sympathy (empathy as well) and my outrage that something like this has become a realistic threat. * hugs*!

It is true that North Korea would never attack first. The problem is the Trump administration is repeatedly floating the idea of "limited strikes" and "boody noses" and there is really nothing stopping Trump from taking such a stupid and incredibly dangerous action.

The constant threats and the building up of military resources in and around the Korean peninsula presents an environment where a "bloody nose" attack might be misinterpreted at just the start of an invasion. Mistakes like these can start wars, and what is to stop North Korea from striking back at Hawaii if it believes it is under attack? They would be stupid not to strike back if Trump decided to bomb them.

In fact, I bet Hawaii or Guam would be the first-strike option of choice for North Korea. They are closer than the US, limiting the flight time and thus the time to respond and they are a smaller target that the North might consider as "expendable" to mainland US. They could then hold the rest of their missiles as a threat to any further military action while demonstrating they had the capability and willingness to use them.

You're being chumped, too, if you think this is a realistic threat.

I think the people who received that text were scared. I think Kim is just as fuc*ing bonkers as Trump which means they are both unpredictable. I think with unpredictability on the table, threat can't be entirely dismissed and neither can the fears of those who are in the line of fire.

Strange how this happens right after Trump flubs his immigration reform meeting getting the press up in arms.

Hawaii official: This was my fault:

http://www.cnn.com/videos/us/2018/01/13/hawaii-missile-alert-human-error-sot.khon

Hats off to emergency administrator Vern Miyagi. He stepped up and immediately took responsibility for it, instead of throwing his employees under the bus - "This is my responsibility, so this is my fault" & "we will take action to prevent this from ever happening again".

We need more of that attitude in this country.

According to officials, they go through a system test to make sure it's working at every shift change. One of the employees pressed the wrong button during the test sequence.

In fairness, NK ramped up their stuff on Trumps watch and for better or worse he responded, not the other way around.

It feels more like a vicious circle. NK made a bit of progress, touted it, prompting the clueless hothead Trump to make things worse, which encouraged NK to keep moving forward, which encouraged Trump to... you get the idea.

While Obama's approach was imperfect, he certainly did one smart thing: he refused to play NK's game. It wants a belligerent US to justify both its nuclear program and the oppression of its citizens. You want to frustrate Kim Jong-un? Give him a US that doesn't play into his strategy.

Maybe it's time to make the sequence for a REAL alert message a little more obvious and involved for the person sending it. Rather than "wrong button". Few confirmation prompts with big red letters. Maybe a siren sound plays for the guy about to send it.

No kidding...I get more confirmation prompts trying to delete a text message than these folks seem to have gotten.

Fuc*wit!
We didn't have a fuc*ed up president antagonizing a fucked up dictator. Had he not been elected we still wouldn't. Make sense? No? There's only one explanation but that explanation also means you're too stupid to understand it.
Just a touch triggered are we? Frightened of the dumpy little boggy man and his starving nation? Give me a break. I lived when the US was face to face with a superpower that had just as many nukes as we did, and the stones to use them.
NK isn't going to make a move that would end in their complete eradication. The little dictator fellow may be crazy, but he isn't stupid. He likes being the top dog, he likes his money, his women (or boy's), his life of ease and luxury, and his power. He's not about to throw that away in an attack that has no possible outcome other than his total destruction.
Don't be ruled by your fear, it will ruin your life.

It's amazing how many systems are like this though, from military systems to critical Fortune 500 systems to other really expensive systems:

One of the job positions every large organization is missing is a sanity checklist person, someone who literally goes around and just makes sure things aren't setup in stupid ways. Now I'm not talking about Six Sigma or KANBAN or anything like that, I mean literally a dude who goes around to every critical process and does a simple sanity check & updates the procedures as needed. Look at virtually any of the major computer hacks within the last few years...some of them are as dumb as literally leaving information lying around on publicly-accessible servers:

Lets be honest here.
Japan had a large well equipped army, they had a formidable navy, they had an air force that was the equal of any, they had an industrial base that could supply the military, and there weren't any nukes. They picked a fight they had a chance of winning. NK can't win an exchange with the US.
On top of that, China isn't going to be a big fan of the idea. If NK nukes the US, who's going to buy all of china's contaminated crap?
