Does it even matter?

How many Hawaiins have bomb shelters and always stay within 10 minutes of the house?
Am I the only one that if I got a message like that I'd jump in the car and drive as fast as I could to the local Air Force Base to make sure I was at ground zero? I'd so much rather be vaporized than die of radiation poisoning.

I've always been happy that I've always worked at or near the most likely nuke targets every where I've ever lived.

I'd be loading guns wondering which neighbor would taste the best.

While on a hike years ago my friend and I picked out our Killing Stones for our significant others. We had them carry them back to the car for us. We almost had to use them that day because well, it was 20 minutes past lunch with an hour drive back. It was touch and go there for a bit. It was her significant other's fault. What all of this told us is that we're ready! Though we were specifically talking about when the zombie apocalypse happens.

The stone sits on the sill as a constant reminder for my husband that calling him by his given name rather than Lunch is just a kindness.

If it was a real missile there would be nothing you could do. You're screwed. Not only will you most likely die, your death will be slow and excruciating unless you were lucky enough to be within 1500 meters or so of the blast hypocenter. Your skin would be scorched off and you'll go blind and deaf but still be alive, only to die a few hours or days later due to a combination of burns, radiation sickness, and dehydration.

It's too bad conservatives had to elect Trump. We never had to fear this kind of stuff under Obama or any other president. Now we have a mentally deranged moron with nukes tweeting threats to a dictator with nukes who has already threatened Hawaii. Trump doesn't care tho because Mar a Largo is so far from north korea and the west coast and Hawaii area Dem states anyway. He'll be on air force 1 tweeting and eating cheeseburgers while millions of Americans die one day.

With previous administrations all Kim Jong Un had to do was beat his chest and checks were written. And we all know the payola NK got from Bill Clinton.

All this has done is to allow this despot to strengthen his grip on power and have money to test rockets.

The NK is walking a fine line. China and other countried are putting the squeeze on NK.

KJU did not assume power until 2011, 10 years after the Clinton presidency ended. Also KJU's grip on power in his country has never struck me as particularly tenuous. The long history of NK making threats and using provocative action to extract economic relief is well known. The race for nuclear tipped ICBMs is a slightly newer phenomena that was arguably brought about by US decisions/policy over the past couple decades. NK put those programs into warp after Trump won the election, for reasons that should be obvious.

Forgive me for being blunt, but the proposition that N Korea would engage in first use of nuclear weapons against the US is completely absurd. I mean, just right out of the wild blue yonder. To entertain that notion for more than a few seconds is to have been chumped by the fear mongers.

It's happened before, of course. I remember the stupid duck & cover drills from the second grade, even an evacuation drill.

Never say never. Hitler was going to play nice with Neville. Kim isn't expansionist but he has been known to shoot people with AA fire and murder relatives and others because he can. That fits no definition of sane I know. I do agree that for the moment it is unlikely Kim will launch first but anything can happen.

In HI I think I would identify areas of survivability and know the basics. Yes boys and girls you too can survive an attack depending on circumstances and location. Ground zero? Maybe if in a really good bank vault structure, but then you have to get out and that's problematic too. Otherwise of there's an alert, know the drill and live a most likely normal lifespan.

Honolulu and 100 kt, airburst. Horrific, but not state obliterating.

We don't have very precise info on NK weapon yields. Estimates from last test ran the gamut from 50kt to 300kt. Also the aimpoint is going to affect things some since HI has geography.

I just plugged in our 9 megaton Titan II (W-53), our most powerful warhead. That wipes O'ahu. The other islands are safe. That is far beyond what NK can produce. Worst case 300 kt on Honolulu produces 156k+ fatalities and 215k injuries, neglecting topography. There's no way to say "that's not so bad" because horrific fails to describe the aftermath. Yet if one is to discuss and- heaven forbid- have to deal with this someday it's best to know the reality of a situation in advance. The difference between casualties and survivors is very often knowledge and preparation, and I'm not talking Survivalist level thinking.

A bomb is coming and you have ten minutes? Grab whatever food you can and (providing you have one) head to the basement. Plug all the drains and start the tub, sinks whatever and cover them with bedsheets or towels. You need uncontaminated water more than anything. Easy to think about that before the fact, but when death is in the air it's not something most people can do.

Advocates for Trump, advocates for Kim. Frankly I think only fools would trust either.

Hollywood individuals now say it was DT's fault - http://ew.com/news/2018/01/13/hawaii-missile-scare-celebrities-trump/

Let see:

Hawaii is a blue state and has a Democrat as Governor.
It was an employee from Hawaii government that sent out the alert in error.

I know, it was Russia that hacked into the system and sent out the alert with the full cooperation from DT and Republicans. Collusion indeed. Case closed everyone.

Fuc*wit!
We didn't have a fuc*ed up president antagonizing a fucked up dictator. Had he not been elected we still wouldn't. Make sense? No? There's only one explanation but that explanation also means you're too stupid to understand it.

Are you talking about North Korea or Russia/Ukraine? He is escalating in both arenas.

Two things Trump owns regarding this. This would never have happened if Trump hadn't been playing chicken with Kim.

The other thing that cannot be blamed on anyone but Trump is how his only interest was golf and attacking the "real" enemy, everyone who doesn't like him.

Other Presidents would almost certainly have dropped what they were doing, golfing including, to get on top of this alert. So far we don't know that Trump is yet aware it ever happened. Trump is the most important thing in this world and I seriously doubt he would have allowed himself to be disturbed if the threat was genuine and a strike was on the way.

Totally agree about DT should not use inflammatory language (rocket man, bigger button, etc.) in public to stir up the situation with NK dictator and nothing from him about this matter (he loves to tweet).

What I am saying is NK is still at war with SK, US, and allies since 1950's, is still piss off as us, and the missile program has been going on for years, not since last year. Fatboy's daddy did fire more than a few missiles to near Japan and SK before.

According to emergency officials, it was part of a drill (ironic given the "not a drill" segment) and wasn't supposed to go public.

With that said, welcome to Trump's America, where the threat of an ICBM attack on Hawaii isn't just a fantasy.

Welcome to the new lefty world. We can totally send out fake emergency messages and then blame Trump. I hope someone is being investigated for making terrorist threats to people of HI.

You're being willfully obtuse. I'm not blaming Trump for the alert; it's just a sad commentary on Trump's needless antagonism and overall stupidity that an alert like this is plausible.

Or a politically motivated government employee who didn't care about their job looking to make the current president and administration look bad which seems to be the new norm.

Nah, more than likely this was an accident. We'd need at least some indication that this was deliberate... and sorry, but there's nothing like that so far.

A rather well timed accident with seeming no repercussions

Even a Republican-dominated FCC believes this was an accident. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence -- provide signs that this was deliberate or drop the conspiracy talk.
