Since we don't consider killing people while texting to be a big deal, I would say the over-under for this guy's sentence is 6 months per person = 6.5 years in jail. Out in 4 years with good behavior.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/callers-reported-swerving-pickup-deadly-bus-crash-050524425.html

The driver of a pickup truck that collided with a church minibus in rural Texas, killing 13 people, apologized after the crash and acknowledged he had been texting while driving, a witness said Friday.

Jody Kuchler told The Associated Press he was driving behind the truck and had seen it moving erratically prior to the Wednesday collision on a two-lane road about 75 miles west (120 km) of San Antonio, near the town of Concan. Kuchler said the truck had crossed the center line several times while he followed it.

Kuchler, 55, a self-employed welder, said he and his girlfriend were driving back to their home in the nearby town of Leakey when he came across a truck that was driving erratically across the road.

"He kept going off the road and into oncoming traffic and he just kept doing that," said Kuchler, who followed the truck for at least 15 minutes.

Kuchler said he called the sheriff's offices for both Uvalde and Real counties and told them "they needed to get him off the road before he hit somebody."

Kuchler said he witnessed the crash and afterward, he checked on both the bus and the truck and was able to speak with the driver of the truck, who has been identified by the Texas Department of Public Safety as 20-year-old Jack Dillon Young, of Leakey.

"He said, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I was texting.' I said, 'Son, do you know what you just did?' He said, 'I'm sorry. I'm sorry,'" Kuchler recalled.

It doesnt matter if Texas has no ban on texting, he'll still be charged with reckless endangerment or something similar.
But yeah, I would not be surprised if he ends up with a minor sentence.

I kinda feel a bit sorry for people addicted to their phones.
Then I remember I'm addicted to porn and the pity turns to sympathy.

Of course, my porn addiction hasnt killed 13 senior citizens on a bus ride.

There's really no excuse for this kind of behavior.

If you do something previously that impairs your decision to drive and ability to drive: manslaughter.

If you active do something that impairs your ability to drive: ???

I've done it before but never came close to an accident but I quit while I was ahead. Now I will just pull over if I feel I have to use the phone to text/email. But that's rarely. I just got used to tuning shit out for a little bit.

B-but he didn't have intent to kill, that makes killing 13 people not as bad. Give him a chance, just look at how Ethan Couch turned his life around.

If I could switch the sentencing laws regarding vehicular manslaughter and first-degree murder I probably would. These pieces of shit, drunk, texting, or whatever else, kill more people and more indiscriminately than most murderers do. Lowest forms of life.

You probably just need to alter your technique. I'm up to 35 senior citizens this year already.

The sad thing is that it wasn't a momentary lapse.

In the video, you can see that this guy was texting for a LONG time:

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/lo...o-shows-moments-church-bus-crash-11042124.php

All while swerving all over the road.

Common sense would dictate you pull over if you have that much texting to do. But I guess the texting of this high school dropout were more important than the safety and lives of others.

See, the problem is that common sense ain't all that common.

Common sense would tell you that anything that takes your attention from the road, for even a brief amount of time, is dangerous; yet hundreds, if not thousands of people do this every single time they get behind the wheel, everyday.

Every day I'm out on the road in my truck, the number of people I see texting while driving (several at highway speeds) disgusts me.

Jesus Christ, you feel guilty about your sexual attraction to other people.... the very instinct that ensures humanity does not go extinct. Name one other animal that feels bad about enjoying sex. This is all just an aftereffect of the thousands of years of cultural shaming of sex.

As the kid of a missionary I have a unique perspective on this. The stone age tribes my parents were trying to convert in the Amazon basin absolutely did NOT have these hangups. Societies evolved these hangups. It served some kind of purpose that promoted human civilization but I am unsure exactly what.

Who is this "we" you think doesn't consider killing people while texting a big deal?

Rick Perry killed it last time. But in general it seems to have little support from freedom loving Texas conservatives in the Texas legislature.

https://www.google.com/amp/www.hous...g-while-driving-houston-texas-law-7956848.php

However roughly 100 cities have banned it in their borders absent action at the state level.

I have trouble standing and texting. I have no idea how people can text and drive. Eating a fast food meal including dipping the fries in ketchup at 85 mph, sure, but texting, nope, I can't do it.

Having a phone in my hand while driving feels just as fundamentally wrong as being in a moving car without a seatbelt. Its somewhat dumbfounding to me that this feeling is not universal, and even if it's not self preservation instinct should cover the rest of the population.

Remember this next time the nay-sayers attack automated vehicles when one is involved in an accident.
The difference is the automation is either not at fault, or will learn from its mistake.

Use of hand held devices while operating a vehicle should be illegal nation wide.

It's lethal, plain and simple.

Throw the book at this idiot. So much pain and suffering created by so little a need, fuck that guy.

Isn't it obvious? We as a society have decided that killing people while texting isn't a big deal.

Driver gets four day prison sentence for killing a man:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ntence-4-days-in-jail/?utm_term=.1d9599fb6944

No prison at all for this idiot who ignored pleas to stop texting immediately before killing a 10 year old girl and her father:

Carlee R. Bollig, 17, allegedly told her three friends to "f--- off" when they gave her a hard time about texting and driving. She reportedly said that she "didn't care if she crashed" moments before the collision occurred.

In a more perfect world that fuckwad would be strung up in the center of town next to a table stocked with scalpels and each passerby would be invited to grab a knife and hack off a little piece until there was nothing left.
