But that's simply not true. You don't have to buy HL2 to get TF2. You can shell out $20.00 and buy it standalone. TF2 is a standalone game that uses the Source Engine. Just like Vampire and just like Dark Messiah (only about $15-20 cheaper because it's MP only). You only get a free copy of HL2 and EP1 if you buy the Orange box. You're free to buy only the games you want. But considering the huge discount you're going to get with Orange, regardless of whether you own HL2 and EP1 already, you'd be foolish to do so, because you're still getting four games for $42.00.

Really, this whole thing baffles me. You can pick up TF2, Portal, Ep2 and Peggle combined for less than the cost of any other single new release out there. And then people complain about getting HL2 and Ep1 for free? That's just crazy talk.

So Valve will probably have swindled yet another customer....

they are scum.

Instead of bitching about it like a little cry baby, I went ahead and ordered the Orange Box. Orange Box is already cheap enough. It's cheaper than buying TF2, Portal, and Ep2 separately.

Boo hoo, Valve won't offer a cheaper Black Box! They suck and I will never buy a game from them again!

I don't understand all the complaints. If you don't want HL2 and Ep 1 buy them separately and pay more. Other companies wouldn't have a problem releasing each of these games seperately for 50 buck a piece. At least Valve is offering a package deal.

I wouldn't call TF2 a mod just like CS is no longer a mod. Once they go and release it as an official game it doesn't really qualify anymore.

Does Counter Strike come with HL2 in the Orange Box? My son's would like to play CS online at the same time. They use my account. So, only one can play at a time. If I buy the Orange box, can I make a new account, which will allow them both to play?

TF2 is a modification OF A MODIFICATION! Don't try to tell me that TF2 is a full game when it's predecessor, it's FREAKING NAMESAKE was a mod.

Gameplay elements have not been revolutionized have they? Do you still have 2 teams capturing flags and using unique classes? Is there a medic? an engineer? Soldier? Heavy? Oh wait.. this all sounds familiar.

So what if they made it look cartoony (which I'll agree looks cool); the changes to the game itself do not constitute a new product that exists by itself without HL2.

It's just lipstick on a pig.

Three things:

One: Shut up.

Two: "Gameplay elements" are rarely revolutionized. Do you know how many games are played from the first person perspective? Lots. Third person isometric? Lots. There are 300,000 class based shooters out there - your argument that because "'gameplay elements' have not been revolutionized therefore it is not a game" doesn't hold any water.

Three: Anyone who uses the word "cuz" (found in one of your later posts) should go back to Myspace and tell us what a great person Britney Spears is.

I agree with Jorynn. Lipstick on a pig. TF2 is a MOD!! It is nothing byt multiplayer flag cpaturing(yes i know i over-simplified). Dave, your argument ends because of lack of accurate facts. TF2 is $30 not 20. and Ep2 is $30 not 20. Had they offered TF2 and Ep2 for $20 each, there'd be no arguments. I would have added yet another episode to my collection without much fanfare. That pricing model would give people the chance to spend $20 on EP2, beat it, then purchase TF2 later for another $20 bucks. I really feel a large majority of Hl fans are in that situation.

But yea, TF2 is a mod and whoever says differently I douubt has played HL series for that long. I remember playing HL deathmatch in 1998 and then seeing the first trailers for TF2. Remember the "new" voice technology they promised back then? Lip synching in real time with a mic.

Nope :\.

As I said in another thread, Orange Box got a 94% in PCGamer... Granted they tend to overrate things that they get the almighty 'exclusive review' for, but hey...

Oh yes, they forced your hand to click the "Purchase" button. Like someone said, vote with your wallet, but you can't even abide by your own principles, so are they worth that much?

Honestly, if Valve offered the Orange Box at $44.95 with EP:2, TF2, and Portal, there'd be *less* complaints.

And to the person calling TF2 a "pig", you're kidding me. Battlefield 2142 is nothing but a mod running on the same engine as BF2. It cost full price when it came out. TF2 has arguably no modern comparison, taking into account its various distinction and uniqueness, even as a mod. A retail price of $30 is unfair somehow? If they released TF2 as a standalone game for $50, would there be less complaints? Suddenly, multi-player only games can all cost full price except truly exceptional ones?

I really don't understand the whiners.

$45 is an amazing deal for TF2, Portal, AND HL2 Episode 2. I'd pony up $45 just for TF2 unless they somehow really screw it up, but I doubt it from what I've seen. Just thinking of the sheer hours I'll get out of that $45 is nice. Compared to $45 spent on just about anything else.

It's funny to think that if they didn't include HL2 and Ep1 there wouldn't be all these people whining.

Give the code to a friend or sell it if you already have it. Or just don't buy if these games aren't worth the money to you.

TF2 is a wee bit more than a mod. Modders aren't going to create something with these production values (e.g. the amazing animations showcased in the various TF2 trailers).

Recommended: Pentium 4 processor (3.0GHz, or better), 1GB RAM, DirectX® 9 level Graphics Card, Windows® Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Your PC should run it at or near maxed out depending on the resolution you play at.

I prepurchased the orange box. I want Ep2 and TF2, I don't care that I already own HL2 and Ep1.

So when did the depression happen again? Last time I checked, $45 isn't a lot of money...especially for three games.

Cheap asses.

SO!!! Anyone hear any news as to what time the beta will start? It is Monday here in the east coast now. I heard a member of the team said the beta will not start until later in the day, but I want to be on this thing as soon as it lights up. Anyone hear any new info?

I've only heard the same thing that you have, unfortunately. Later in the day.

As long as it's not a crash-fest beta, though, I'll be happy to wait a few more hours. I still can't believe after all these years the game is actually going to be playable.

Duke Nukem Forever is losing its competition in the vaporware department.

The beta hasn't even been released yet and already they reviewed and rated the game?
Anyone else find that strange?

No? I'm sure there's been a closed beta going on for quite awhile now.

Checking in on this thread; thought we'd know what time it will be released by now. I preloaded this morning so it'll definitely be ready to play. I actually hope it's not till tonight, cause if I read this thread this afternoon that it's ready to play, I'll probably have the urge to walk home. And if it's really good, well that won't be good for the work I need to get done today. Quakeworld and later TF is basically what got me into online gaming... really defined how class-based games are today. I hardly play any games these days, even though I have like 10 installed I really want to play. But that is mostly due to time, but even so, I haven't been addicted to anything for a long time.

I'm wondering how the beta will be. I reminded my cousin last week about the preorder and TF2 beta since he was into TF twice as much as me (which is a lot) and he cautioned me that when he played the CS:S beta in fall 2004, it was pretty crappy. It only had one map, dust, which he and I hate. But CS:S wasn't much different than CS, and sure TF2 is obviously similar to TF, but the amount of time that's passed... I think it'll play a lot different. I'm hoping the beta isn't really crappy though.

Grrrr, Orange Box. I already have HL2 and HL2:E1. Do I really want to spend an extra $25 for TF2 and Portal over just buying HL2:E2?

I'm REALLY liking ET:QW. If TF2 can satisfy my multi-player fix I'll just forgo QW and get Orange Box.
