I run at that resolution with a 20" WS monitor without a problem. And my computer is about two years old. One thing I've got to hand to Valve is that they make games that look great on reasonable computers. I mean hell, I've got an old P4 at 3.96 and a 7800 GTX and the game runs maxed for me.

I have this running @ 1920x1200 @ 16:10 ratio with an x1800xt. It runs at 30 fps or so with the settings maxed. It's very slow to load, and if I tab out, it often crashes. Hopefully they'll fix these issues at release.

Not sure what the issue is for me, but it is quite annoying. I would like to see the game in all its glory! Maybe it's a crossfire thing.

Thanks guys!

Don't count on it, source games have a history of crashing when you try to alt-tab them. CSS is still this way.

I have mine running 1920x1200 on an 8800GTX in Vista 64 using the new Nvidia Drivers from yesterday. I crashed after a minute with my old drivers. havent crashed since (unless we count alt-tabbing, which is a no-no).

Ive put quite a few hours in, and I gotta say I love this game. I was hooked on gunmod CSS, but this could take over. So far my most played class is Demoman by far. His sticky bombs are friggin amazing, and the grenade launcher aint to shabby either. I also have put alot of time into the scout as well. Initially I was all sniper but have definitely shyed away from him alot now, and rarely ever grab him.

I also hate the pyro, seems worthless to me.

I played a different map today, some sort of BF2 type map where you have to capture points. Did not like it at all. The gameplay was very jarring in that a round starts and can be over within 15 seconds. And once a point is captured, it starts a new round like CS but with a different set of capture points. It would be much better if it was like BF2 and all the captures points were on the same map. 2Fort4 is still the best.

Oh and Balt, the Soldier as a sentry killer can be very difficult. I was able to kill sentries on some of the bigger maps, but the flag room in 2Fort4 is next to impossible. Even popping out and firing blindly and hiding again would get me killed first because the sentry would always get at least 1 bullet into me and the engineer was in there repairing it constantly. Offense really depends on Medics being able to keep someone killing sentries alive or a really good spy.

Curious if they incorporated any of the new engine code into this beta, namely multi-core support...can anyone check? =]

I agree with Skacer on the other non-CTF maps. It's a shame they spent so much time developing this style of map for 1-2 minute games between map loads, very lame.

just played it last night...they have a lot of people playing right now on a good amount of servers. It plays very much like I remember TFC playing. The cartoon graphics go very well I think with the gameplay. If it were realistic looking, it would be stupid watching all of teh bunnyhopping rocketjumping people IMO. I played on fort and some dust board where you capture points. You really have to know the maps to play, it makes it a little hard at first. Also, I was never sure about how to play as each character and what some stuff does, like the uber thing for the medic, but I guess you just have to learn it as it goes.

Fun little game.

I love the new CP maps personally, I believe they are the funnest so far. Though its a lot of fun, having played tfc for so long it is not going to hold my attention all that long. The team play and coordination aspect of it is awesome i think. If you actually played in a decent clan (good luck finding one without 12yr olds, and who cares enough anyways) then strategy can easily win/lost the game for you.

That's funny because I alt-tab out of CS:S all the time with no problem, but I hear a lot of people have problems with it.

Anyway, I have updated to the latest Cats (had to in order to play Crysis) but it did not help. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears.

Is there a way to force the resolution, like adding Width:1920 Height:1200 at the end of the .exe or something like that?

Thanks again,
KT

one thing that bugs me is the lack of widescreen support. I don't see any WS resolutions listed, there may be a fix to it, but it is kind of annoying a game this new can't support WS.

It's there. Go into Video options and you select your aspect ratio (4:3, 16:9, 16:10) and the change your resolution to whatever you need.

oh damn, guess I was too excited to jump into the game that I missed that. I just jumped in menu turned everything all the way up, and started playing.

BTW, my rig plays this game with everything on high flawlessly, I didn't benchmark, but it was a constant over 60 FPS easy i would say.

C2D e4300
2 GB RAM
ATI x1950 pro

so you can play with older computers, not too different from CS:S i would say.

KT,

Have you tried just waiting a while before closing the game down after you select that resolution? When I switched my res from the default 1024x768 to 1680 x 1050 is did exactly what you are describing for almost 2 whole minutes. I just let it sit and voila! The res had been changed. It does this to me on CS:S sometimes too.

Hmm, no I have not tried that (too damn impatient I guess). I'll try just waiting out the stuttering once I get home. Hope it works!

Thanks for the tip!

I think I'll enjoy the game more when some classic maps get remade by players or whomever. Having only one CTF map makes the CP maps get tiresome pretty quickly, imo. I loved CP maps in TFC but I didn't want to play them exclusively.

Also Sudden Death doesn't really work in its current implementation. People have figured out that to stay alive they can just turtle behind sentries and wait for the enemy to come to them. Of course, the enemy does the same thing so a lot of SD rounds just end in stalemate anyway.

The last Suddent Death round I saw, the other team had 2 invincible HW'ers clearing out an entire room, hahaha. It was brutal, I ran.

So if I purchase the orange pack now could I play TF2 Beta still? I've been looking forward to it, and if it's going to cost 30 bucks by itself, I might as well get the HL2 episodes out of it for 15 dollars.

Actually, I can alt-tab out of CS:S as much as I please, and do so all the time. But TF2 I think is poorly optimized right now and it just sits at a black screen for a while, and its faster to restart than to let it recover I find.

Also I havent seen the intro movie yet, but I can hear it. The gameplay is unaffected though

This is so much fun! The changes to classes seem good.
TF2 as you once knew it most certainly is vaporware. If you want something that looks like it probably keeps to the spirit of the game better, check out Fortress Forever, which is already out (and is the reason I'd love to get somebody's extra HL2 gifted to me)

when i switched to 1680x1050 it froze and stuttered for a little bit but then worked ok.

so are you guys all playing on different servers or do you have one set up for ATers?

It's definitely going to take a bit to learn all the classes and what they can do. I wish there was a tutorial, especially for people new to TF.

With the spy, when cloaked, are you completely invisible or if you move, can the enemy see you? Also, while cloaked, if you want to attack, you have to uncloak, right? Can you use the sapper while cloaked?
If you cloak while an enemy is looking at you, does the cloaking fail, can they still see you?
When you are disguised, are you completely disguised, like they have no idea you are an enemy unless they shoot you?

Can engineers repair another engineer's sentries and stuff or can you only repair your own? How do you repair, just whack it with your wrench?
I think it sucks that you only get so many points to build stuff. Sure, you can run back to resupply, but considering that, i don't really see the point in having points then.

Can the demoman detonate his sticky nades while they are being thrown? I thought I saw a guy do this last night but it didn't seem to work when I tried it.

Is a headshot always a one shot kill, no matter the gun used? I kept getting killed very quickly last night and it just seemed to be one shot kills, and they weren't snipers.

I don't understand this crowd of people who want the same damn game over again. TF2 is something new, as it should be! Not just QTF/TFC with new graphics. I think it will be fun once people get the hang of things and start figuring out how to play their classes as a team I am already kickin ass with the soldier/scout. I also am getting into the medic... It's so damn satisfying to be healing people up and realize you have to bust out some ass whooping. I go for the bone saw, it's just like knifing in CS:S!

Thanks, going to try it later.

I'm playing on Thinking Man #1 right now because they have a good rotation and the players seem decent. It would be cool to see an AT server though.
