I think it's pretty naive to assume that it was random in time. They stated that they were rolling out the updates whenever the 25 milemark was hit so it's only logical that they would control the rate that they would be awarded to space out the updates. I would assume that the wrench is randomly assigned to whoever is crafting during the period of assignment. Hell, they could just a priori select 25 random times for each day. I can't believe people are actually whining about this.
Christ, I just don't get any of the damn drama that goes on with this game in the Steam forums.
Well I didn't craft my entire backpack in the hopes of getting a GW. Personally I would much rather have a hat but it seems the people crying on steam forums did in fact craft everything they had in one go... LOL.

The problem is threefold here. First, since near everybody is playing engie, combos of other classes are going to be hard to put together.
Secondly, numbers - a heavy/demo combo can (or rather, could) take out 1, maybe 2 sentries with an uber. Against 6 though? Knockback alone is going to make that hard. Even before they gave the engie a weapon that boosts firing rate of sentries (and thus, knockback).
Thirdly, that weapon that increases firing rate? It also reduces damage to his sentry by 66%. Which means even devoted demos would be hard-pressed to take out more then 1 in an uber.
Can someone summarize what the golden wrench is and why people are mad about it?
Just read through a good 50 pages or so. In summary, Valve lied through their teeth about the drop mechanics.
There is a screenshot of an e-mail from what I assume is a valve employee saying that everytime you craft an item you have a chance of getting the wrench. Now, this is blatantly false as the drop times were predetermined and they had to meet certain constraints like 25 per day, being fair to timezones, and basically the 100th wrench coming in at the time they are ready to unveil the last update.
Drop times were leaked somehow and so up until the 67th wrench, it's likely that only the people who knew of the leaked times got them. The leaked times were known to the second.
Valve decided to vac ban 3 people. It seems that one of them wrote a script to craft items really quickly unrelated directly to the golden wrench. Something about the smelt metal blueprint being removed. He also knew of the leaked times as well.
I'm really meh on the gunboats nerf.
