tf2/general fps snipering question

hi, historically i've been a poor/average sniper. however yesterday in TF2, i was getting headshots and actually dominated some people, which has never happened to me before as a sniper.

it was so uncanny that i wondered if something was wrong with my computer. i did defragment the comp (via windows and the steam option) earlier and i also noticed my ping was at ~28, which is lower than usual.

my system itself is pretty old but runs tf2 at around 40 fps when the action gets hot.

any ideas, or did i just have an incredible 1 hour stretch of luck?

the fact that these things are impressive should tell you how bad i was before. but i'd still like some explanation as to why/how this happened.

You could have been playing against some pretty bad players, or you got really lucky...why do you need an explanation? haha

As you play more sniper, the thing you'll realize is that being on the better team has an exponential effect on your perceived skill level. That's true of most classes, but sniper moreso than the others. Given that you didn't mention anything new you were applying based on something you learned, I think it's safe to assume you happened to be on the dominating team.

How well your computer is defragged has nothing to do with your server latency. I would guess you were playing against a team lacking a comparable sniper, spy; or just made some nice shots with some luck scattered in.
Sometimes I play above my skill level too but I can usually account for it by realizing I happened upon a fortunate situation or got a well timed crit rocket.
Keep practicing though, it's the only way to get better

I remember the day I got 15 kills in a row without dying once. And I remember a minute later I paid attention to what they had been typing for the last 5 minutes. They'd all agreed to use knifes only. So my awesome run wasn't even legit

haha bummer. for my now legendary amazing run, i was using the old rifle (no arrow BS) with the dot crosshair. maybe i remembered some of the q3arena railgun reflex.

It could be due to the class makeup of the other team. I occasionally go on big runs when there is no good counter to my class on the other team. This is also why I tend to play better on less populated servers.

Yes, definitely. Could be a bit of skill as well, as in the other team does not have much and keep walking into the headshots.

I've had days where I get a dozen kills in a row, and others where I can't even fire my rifle before I die. I feel like it's a combination of luck and the other team's lack thereof (or maybe they all just sucked on the days I was doing well).

Oh, and if you're sniping in 2fort, play on the red team. You'll be harder to spot in the shadows.

update: played a bit yesterday, nowhere near as good but a bit better than usual. killed a spy by throwing pee on him then shooting him twice, unscoped.

You can try messing with your zoom_sensitivity ratio.

I think i usually set mine at .8

Are you also comparing sniping in TF2 vs sniping in other FPSs? If so, I'd have to say that sniping in TF2 is way easier than it is in many other FPSs.

I'm usually a terrible sniper, and I can top the charts as a sniper on a fairy competitive TF2 server. It always helps if you have enemy pyros and heavies that just keep wandering out into the open and thinking they won't get killed again. So yeah, just to echo the sentiment that a lot of it depends on the team as a whole.
