I just played for ~2 hours straight after buying the soldier gear ($25). I believe TF2 came in a package with HL2 or something, but let's just say I paid $20 or whatever full price is.

I had an absolute blast. The only thing I've noticed that's really truly annoying about these 'buffed' players is the extra pyro speed. Pyro is already a n00b class, and this is just ridiculous.

I haven't played it yet, but I have been hearing about another problem with this system - servers are littered with players just sitting at spawn spamming WTT messages for the trading system.

I'm ok with them charging more money for stuff. They could of released it and been done with it but they didnt. They took a game that looked absolutely insane and played perfectly to a game that looks like it was designed while taking LSD and still plays well.

I ran into this last night... A LOT.
Characters idle forever in the spawns doing lord knows what or plyers chatting more about trading than the game. They need a way to do this out-of-game.

That being said, I think this is a horrible addition.

Someone posted this on the Steam forums

Valve have really screwed themselves here. If they remove the hats from the store, people will complain that the early buyers get an advantage. If they remove them and increase the drop rate, the buyers will complain that they paid for something they could have had for nothing.

I'm done with Valve after this shit. Not just TF2. This whole fiasco says a lot about the company. My interest in Ep3 was already waning, TF2 has become far too complex and the L4D games are pathetically bad anyway. How could a company go from being by far the greatest game studio in the world to.... this? What a shame.

Yes they CAN be gotten in a drop but that doesn't mean you will get it. I've played hundreds of hours of TF2 and have NEVER gotten a hat as a drop. Not once, EVER.

And who cares?
Hats are purely cosmetic, they give no gameplay advantage.
Except in the case of set based hats, which Valve said will be craftable.
I've never gotten a drop hat either, but does it really matter? And does it make any difference whether some idiot with mommy's credit card got one earlier than me?

Well be it hats or weapons, the drop system sucks.

So I finally played for a while and damn, you guys were right, this new system sucks ass. I was hoping everyone was just overreacting, but after losing multiple rounds because half of my guys were busy trading items, I got disgusted and quit. I'll probably try again in a bit, but damn, way to fuck up my favourite game.

it has always been like this. New classupdate/map/dropsystem leads to 4-6 weeks of complete team imbalance(everyone trying out new weapons), achievement grinding(7 engys building in spawn), idling(a dozen players in spec).

It will go away in 2 months, have a small resurgence as all the grade/highschoolers get out on holiday break, and then settle back down to normal play.

The only thing that wont go away is the chat haggling for trades. Everyone should just adopt a simple system of adding a "WTB/WTS hat" tag to their name. then everyone can just look at the scoreboard to see what is available.

This just happened to me today. First, I don't get it. This is not a freakin' RPG. Nor do we play with Barbie dolls. Who gives a flying f what your guy is wearing? Also, who knows how long guys are going to be trading for. I hope it goes away soon. I was playing like a 6 v 6 today and 2 of my guys idled until like 2 minutes to go on a payload map. Another server - same thing. Only people were just talking all day about "anyone got a _______" etc, "no, but I have a ________" It's like come on...

For a little while there I didn't realize there were purchase-only hats that gave you tactical advantage. That's probably the only thing that pisses me off now. Buying items simply for decoration, or buying balanced weapons is just fine, but making it so only paid users have an advantage is bad, bad, bad.

This.

I haven't seen any of this idling/trading stuff. Maybe it's cause I really only play on 1 server and the guys there are usually pretty good at not fucking around. They were trading and bargaining but they were playing at the same time.

Can't you simply play on servers that has this disabled or do they force all servers to use it?

I don't really play TF2 other than at LANs w/ friends anyway, but this is another way to ensure less time in the game for me.

Very disappointing to see, though not surprising.

I want a "classic" mode that switches back to just before the WAR!!! update. All the shit since then is just f*cking redonkulous.

I main demo, solly, medic and engie and use stock weapons for the most part (only kritz, ubersaw, gunboats and pickaxe).

People are greatly overstating the effect items have on this game and underplaying how much skill matters. Outside of a couple exceptions, all items are designed as replacements which help the class deal with certain weaknesses but expose others as a tradeoff. A person who has all the items will have some flexibility in what they can do as their class, but they will not be definitively more powerful than a player of the same class and stock items.

It takes you all of 1-2 encounters if you haven't previously read an item description to figure out it's effects?

I know people are resistant to change, but all this complaining about TF2 suddenly becoming newb unfriendly is just retarded.

Wow, this was an eye opener:
http://teamfortress.com/mannconomy/item_sets/

Now I understand why I kept on firing at the sniper's head as a spy behind him and couldn't kill him. Then he chased me away and killed me with a 30 yard reach machete (bushwaka) swing.

Another disappointing moment was when played as a soldier, being killed by a scout with an upgraded pistol that slows you down. I switched to a scout and got my ass handed to me again.

I logged over 900 hours in this game and think it is time to finally uninstall it like I did with the CS2. It consumes too much of my time. Seriously this is like an addiction!

I honestly don't think there's as much of a learning curve as some are suggesting, but I do think that stuff like this tends to drive away the casual players. Games like TF2 are generally played because at any moment you can just connect to a server on a whim and have some fun. It's not usually like an MMORPG where you are expected to invest thousands of hours into building a character.

Plenty of times people will just say "hmm I feel like playing TF2 tonight" and they can just connect and play and have fun. I myself love the game, but probably only have time to play a couple of hours a week. Now many are going to connect and find a bunch of people using items that they themselves will probably never get unless 1) they start playing a LOT or 2) pay out the ass for them.

I like most of the older additions they made, because all you really had to do was get a relatively low number of achievements for the relevant class. They also addressed what most thought were some class weaknesses.

I think the latest patch has gone overboard, though, and I definitely don't like the pay-for-useful-gear element. Let people pay for aesthetic items if they want, but not items that can actually give a tactical advantage. Even if the items are craftable/droppable, the casual player will still be left behind in the end because they don't invest that kind of time in the game.

Overall, I think they've just made the game less friendly to people who enjoy playing it on an occasional basis.

The new Scout pistol blows compared to the Scattergun. It's such a downgrade that it's not worth having 25 extra health.

This is absolutely true and is evidenced right in this thread. For people like you and me it's not as big of an issue, but for the more casual player it most assuredly will.

I ended up playing a bit more after my original post and it was not as bad. There were still people putting out trade requests here and there, but not as bad as the first time, so it was not quite as annoying. I hope things just die down after a while, sort of like with all of the other updates where everyone plays a certain class for a while.

So say a sniper has a full item set and gets the no headshots buff. If I shoot him in the head with a fully charged sniper, does it just count as a body shot, or does it count as a miss?
