there really was not anything wrong with windows 8

if you didn't like the start menu there were free ways to make it work like 7

besides that everything about 8 was better than 7

Did the free upgrade this weekend from Windows 7 Professional to Windows 10 Pro. Clean install of course.

So far I like it a lot.

how did you do a clean install? Upgrade first, then create an ISO and do a clean install to replace the upgraded win 10?

What technical reason keeps you on windows 7?
What limitation of Windows 8 or 10 keeps you locked in to Windows 7?

It's not a matter of limitations. I've also been using Windows since 3.1, and each time I upgraded it has been because I wanted to get stuff that was better than the stuff I had. In the case of Windows 8 it didn't offer me anything Windows 7 didn't aside from Metro and that whole horrible abomination of a tiled interface. Why on earth would I go through an upgrade to get that? Now with 10 they are removing Media Center, which I use daily, and adding a bunch of stuff like Cortana and a rebuilt browser that I don't care about. Once again I simply see no reason to upgrade until they force me to.

What happened to Windows 9?

It was for lifers only.

I think 8 was bad enough that M$ wanted to distance themselves from it as much as possible. 9 is too close, 10 is farther away.

Nothing keeps me locked in. 7 just works great and nothing in 8 or 10 provided any real incentive to change. I don't understand people who simply must have the latest software no matter what. Generally you all work as unpaid beta testers and the people who are more patient wait for the truly superior products. Only upgrade to new software if the current version is somehow lacking or the new one offers something that's must have and that goes triple for operating systems. Only migrate if you have a reason to migrate and Win 7 is good enough that MS has yet to convince me that I need something else.

If you're taking up Microsoft on its offer of a free upgrade to Windows 10, you should know that the new operating system has a feature, called Wi-Fi Sense, that automatically shares your Wi-Fi passwords with others.

When Wi-Fi Sense is enabled, anyone you have in your Skype, Outlook or Hotmail contacts lists — and any of your Facebook friends — can be granted access to your Wi-Fi network as long as they're within range.

What does Windows 10 do better than Windows 7 does?

While some of these are true of Windows 8.x as well....

Faster, Light weight, Better multi-monitor support, built in ISO mounting, better task management, Multiple desktops, DX12....

Nothing earth shattering but OS's are pretty mature at this point. I'm not sure what someone would expect out of a new OS release other than this sort of stuff. Especially for Free.

Good thing MAC lockdown is an option on the router.

Edit:

Automatically connect you to Wi‑Fi networks that your Facebook friends, Outlook.com contacts, or Skype contacts have shared with you after you've shared at least one network with your contacts. When you and your contacts share Wi‑Fi networks with each other, you give each other Internet access, but don’t get to see each other’s passwords. No networks are shared automatically. When you first connect to a network that you decide to share, you'll need to enter the password, and then select the Share network with my contacts check box to share that network.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/wi-fi-sense-faq

Looks like one has to intentionally share a network; it isn't automatic.

This part worries me more:

Can Wi‑Fi Sense discover my location even if I have the Windows location service turned off for my user account?
Yes. Wi‑Fi Sense can discover your device location even when location is turned off for your user account. This is true whenever Wi‑Fi Sense is turned on. Wi‑Fi Sense uses your location to find suggested open Wi‑Fi hotspots.

Pretty much. 8.1 with Classic Start is excellent. The only thing about 8.x that I hate is that the windows don't have a shadow around them. It makes them a little more difficult to see what windows ends/starts where when tiled. Thankfully 10 fixes this.

The hate for Windows 8 is somewhat irrational. While I will admit I never fully adapted to using it on my desktop PC, on a tablet device is was phenomenal in my opinion. So phenomenal that I feel like Windows 10 is a step back on my Surface Pro 3 compared to Windows 8.

But, I've made the leap to Windows 10 and I'm not going back.

the only reason i upgrade my versions of OSX is because newer versions of xcode require newer versions of OSX and i can't do iphone dev without xcode. if that wasn't the case i would be on an old version of OSX as well.

desktop at home is on win7 and i don't plan on upgrading any time soon. just don't need to so there will be no benefit.

I would assume you have to be using the windows FB app for them to know any of this

not sure but this was in the piece.

Despite the safeguards, the issue is nonetheless dangerous for those users, and there are many of them, who agree to everything their computers ask of them. If they agree to share Wi-Fi Sense with their Facebook friends, then, yep, all of their Facebook friends will be given access to their networks. (We've already encountered this request from Windows 10, which didn't really explain what the feature entailed.)

Other than them farking the start menu, so now I have that many more shortcuts on the task bar and desktop, 8.1 was a pretty decent improvement over 7. Would be interested in trying 10, but the whole WMC thing means no time soon.

Was this "feature" in the Insider test versions and we all missed it or did they slip this in at the last minute?

I freely admit, I never would have bothered to look for this setting/feature on the test versions, but surely SOMEONE in the Insider community would have caught it...
